Hello everybody,

I got my first subtitling project today. I am so excited but have a question to you. The client said that the project should be done in 'ass' format. I opened the file, translated it, but I couldn't delete the English texts in the back. Is there any way to delete these texts?

Hi Handan,

Without seeing the actual subtitle file, I can't give you a definitive answer. It depends on a few things, like:

- Whether the English and Turkish subtitles are on the same line
- Whether both languages are encoded under the same timecodes but on separate lines
- What tool you used to translate and save the file

Nevertheless, you can open the .ass subtitle file in Notepad and edit it directly.

Nevertheless, you can open the .ass subtitle file in Notepad and edit it directly.

Look for the lines that start with Dialogue. These are the subtitle lines. You can manually delete the English parts and leave only the Turkish, just be careful not to change the structure of the line (the commas and formatting need to stay intact).

If you post a screenshot, I might be able to give it another shot.

Not surprised that the ass format is in the back of the video (sorry for not being helpful).

Burned-in subtitles Apr 12

So the English subtitles are burned-in? Unless you have the original video without them, there isn't much you can do. Or rather, removing burned-in subtitles is quite complicated.

I'm guessing that they are hard coded on the video, and if so, then there isn't a way to remove them.
Probably they are hard coded with a good reason, maybe somewhere in the corners is the logo of the client?

And the .ass format allows you to position your subtitles over them, above them, under them, and you can put your subtitles in opaque box and actually cover those.
With VirtualDub you can blur that subtitles' spot on the video, but that isn't subtitler's job.

Like Alessio told you, no need to worry about those eng hc subtitles, probably your client will use different video for broadcasting.
