What happens in translator's mind?
As for literary translations - it is a search for better expression.
If you have line:
The waiter was nice
and you have to translate it with rhyming, you could do it like this:
The bar-tender
Was very tender...

(Of course, this isn't the only option, hundred people would translate it in hundred
different ways... and in better way...)

Conclusion: Waiter doesn't always have to be a waiter. It can be a bartender, too.

I agree with what you said,my question is exactly the same, I want to know what happend in the mind of translator to make such a translation from 'waiter' while the other translator may translate it in other way.of course there is a complicated and momentary process in the mind, that yields such distinctions. finding out these processes are my field of interest.

realy appriciate you,I am going to use TAP method to extract the mental processes of translator and you actualy and may be unwantedly give me the first observation. your example is realy a sample of mental operation that a translator says" ok here because I want to keep the rhyme, I prefer to use bar tender and tender instead of waiter and nice". thank you so much
