When translating into Latvian, we have to transcribe all the personal names, geographical names etc. according to their pronunciation in the orginial language.
A colleague asked me to help with Latin-american geographical names. I have no problem with names of obvious Spanish or Portuguese origin, but some of them are most likely of Quechua origin and I have no idea what is the pronunciation. For example, "Hullcayo"- is "h" pronounced?

I hope maybe a more experienced colleague might have an advice regarding pronunciation of the following geographical names:
Quehuisha
Chayco
Mismi
Hullcayo
Ccaccansa
Mauccallacta
Chocayhua
Huayque
Goycochea (this is a surname)
Chinchaypujio
Huancayo
Puinahua
Atahuallpa
All there names are from a book about a journey to Amazon. ▲ Collapse

Goicochea
Mar 11, 2005
is actually Basque in origin and transcribed there Goikotxea.
Some of the transcription may have been lifted out of old Spanish texts (instinct tells me as a historical researcher). If you enter them in Google and Spanish text comes up, this will be because they follow the rules of Spanish pronunciation. That leaves you with words like "Hullcayo" and "Ccaccansa", but already takes quite a bit off your list.

Dear fellows,
Excuse me if I make a somehow off-topic and very late contribution, but... as this thread is devoted to the Quechuan language, may I point to an interesting event on this language?
