Something is wrong with that sentence but I do not know what:

The spelling mistakes, the problems of agreement and turnings of sentences awkward jump me to the eyes.
in French it is:
Les fautes d’orthographe, les problèmes d’accord et les tournures de phrases maladroites me sautent aux yeux.

Is somebody can help me. The rest is perfect but that sentence I do not know what is wrong.

Thank you

Hi Lise, here's one revision to get things going:

The spelling mistakes, the problems with agreement and awkward turns of phrase leap out at me.

Not quite sure about 'problems with agreement' (might be 'mismatches'), but otherwise Kim's version is fine.

Hi Kenneth, I assumed "problems with agreement" referred to subject-verb agreement problems.

Hello,

You may want to remove 'the' (or use it only once) and change 'awkward' to 'clumsy'.

This would probably be accurate:

'[The] spelling mistakes, problems with agreement and clumsy turns of phrase leap out at me.'

Please reply with comments.

Tim

There's no difference in meaning between awkward and clumsy. It's a matter of style.

Thank Kim., I wonder now if there is a difference in language level? Oct 12, 2005

clumsy or awkward? Oct 12, 2005

Yes, as Kim says, 'clumsy' and 'awkward' are interchangeable. 'Clumsy' seems more appropriate (and probably collocates more often with 'turn of phrase') in the field of language.

Hi Tim,
actually I think 'clumsy' flows better in this case. As for collocations, a Google search under 'awkward turn of phrase' yields 342 hits versus 92 for 'clumsy turn of phrase.' Awkward is the most common adjective for US English, so it could be a UK vs. US English difference.

clumsy vs akward (again) Oct 12, 2005

Thanks Kim.

I've just had another thought. Although 'clumsy' and 'awkward' are interchangeable, perhaps 'clumsy' is slightly more informal or colloquial?
