in a language-related profession


Dear Madam or Sir,

I am writing in my capacity as coordinator of a European co-operation project in the area of languages, which has 86 partners – universities, associations, and employers – in 27 European countries. The principal aim of the project is to prepare the ground for continuous consultation and co-operation at all levels between universities on the one hand and people and organisations inside and outside education with an interest in higher education language studies, including companies and alumni, on the other. We are convinced that only in this way will the universities be able to adapt their courses and offerings to changing demands on the labour market and to the concept of lifelong learning.

Among the areas we look at is “language-related industries and professions”. Here, we would like to find out more about the changing character of the ‘language-related professions’ and to investigate the relevance of current higher education (HE) provision to the skills demanded by your current work as alumni or, should you be a leader of a language-related organization, the skills you require from a person working for you in this quality.

In order to start a dialogue with employers of the language industry and with graduates, we have launched a Europe-wide consultation, which takes the form of two brief and relatively simple questionnaires – one designed for employers, the other for alumni. We should be immensely grateful if you could participate in the consultation and complete the questionnaire enclosed. The most convenient method of completing and returning the questionnaire is to use the electronic version available at the project Web site. For this, please observe the following steps:
1. go to www.fu-berlin.de/tnp/consultation/sp1.html
2. under “Questionnaire for graduates”, click on the language of your choice OR
under “Questionnaire for employers”, click on the language of your choice
3. complete and submit the questionnaire
Prior to the consultation, experts engaged in the project prepared national reports for a large number of countries as well as a synthesis report presenting trends across Europe observed and initial recommendations. Both the national reports and the synthesis report can be accessed by clicking on the respective links at the left-hand side of the Web page.

By using the electronic questionnaire, you will make sure that your answers are directly transferred to our database, which will greatly facilitate analysis.

I should be grateful if you could complete the questionnaire at your earliest convenience but before 15 July 2005. Please rest assured that your responses will be treated with strict confidentiality.
