Server not really a solution for me Jan 30, 2011

What I need is in fact a fast storage device, as the HDD of my PC is too full.

I would like to try the second solution. After having spoken with Trados support, who says it should work, when the files are external, but TMs & TB internal, I decided to give it a try.
Would I go for a server this would involve the cost for operating system and new HDDs, as the PC I have is not large enough. I would maybe get additional 750 GB on disk space.
So I decided for a different solution.
I ordered a QNAP TS-219P+ and two Seagate HDDs 2 TB each.
This will give me a 2 TB NAS with RAI1 for security. Backups are realized by Acronis Backup&Recovery WS+, the backup target is an external USB HDD. I also have another external USB HDD connected, where all the private stuff like photos and so on is located.

When I get the drive I will report here.

Internediate report Feb 11, 2011

I've bought a QNAP Ts-219P+ NAS and two Seagate Barracuda HDDs, 2 TB each.
The HDDs are mounted to a RAID1 group, having thus a total storage capcity of just 2 TB, but giving me the security against the hardware crash.
The system is working in my office since one week.
I have migrated all my data but TMs and termbases to the NAS.

The system is working in my office since one week.
I have migrated all my data but TMs and termbases to the NAS.
For the time being I did not have had any huge projects, but for normal and mid-size projects the NAS performs very well. I keep all project data, including project TM (from Studio 2009) on the NAS, while the master TMs, termbases and AutoSuggest dictionaries are placed localy. No performance dop-outs so far, so I can say the solution is good.
Advantages: data is available from any PC at home and (in the future) can be made accessible online. No space limits so far, I do not expect to get the NAS full withing the next few years. Due to the accessibility of data it will also be easier to cope with EN 15038 in terms of on-screen review.
Drawbacks: so far none.
Installation was easy, you do not need to be neither a hardware geek nor a software guru. Just place the HDDs on the tray, use enclosed screws and a screwdrvier to fix them, insert into the NAS and the hardware is ready. Then connect the hardware to the router and to power and switch it on. The rest is done nearly automaticaly, you just need to enter some values. Create a user account on the NAS as would you do in Windows, map the drive in Windows as network drive and start using it.
Price: roughly 450 EUR for the system including VAT.
Put together: the best solution I can think of for a small office. Vaule to price ratio beats every server.

Internet connection? Feb 11, 2011

Thanks, Jerzy!

One of the things I like less for the Stora is that it needs an Internet connection for its setup. You have to register it with Netgear even if you are not planning to access it online.

I understand that this is not needed with most NAS devices. Is that the case with yours?

Daniel

I needed Internet connection for obtaining the latest firmware Feb 12, 2011

But I did not register with QNAP for Internet services.
I may do that some day later, as I planned to get acces to my data via VPN, but first I have to study how to make this secure. For the time being I am using the NAS only locally.
And the performance is really promissing.

The NAS perfomance is also a function of the HDDs used. The Barracudas are quite fast for read, ok for writing, but very bad in copying data. The reading speed is indeed enough for my purposes. Also the write speed is ok for using Studio. However the performance of the whole system when I copied my working files from PC to NAS was not so good. Copying of some 150 GB data took around 12 hours... However, this I needed to do once, so I do not really care about that - I left the system doing that in the night.
