An ounce of prevention...

A program named SpinRite, then it was the v2, in the ancient PC-XT days, when a 40 MB (sic!) hard disk cost USD 400 (sic!) in Brazil, saved me two of these from going to the trash bin.

The program is not expensive, and I run it on all hard disks once or twice a month, overnight, to keep them working smoothly. Sometimes the whole system won't boot, so I know it's past the time to do it again. It boots on DOS (a free version is included) from a CD or floppy, and runs on its own. This software helps you monitor the health of a drive, and tell you if it really is failing. Some older drives are noisier by default. Other times a drive can silently die when you aren't looking, corrupting files without warning.

This program should help you rely on something more quantitative than your hearing.
