One or two things to consider: many browsers have a bit of a "memory-leak" problem (like Firefox - even the new version) which means that if they have been open for a while with you opening and closing tabs, they can be using up more memory than they should. It sometimes helps to close and reopen the browser occasionally.
But fundamentally, the commenters above who mention the dual core processor are giving good advice, in my opinion. That + 2-4 gigs of memory and you'll really notice the difference compared to what you have now.

This is correct. Also consider switching browsers. I use Chrome, which crashes less often and responds quicker especially with java.

Something that most people completely overlook is cleaning up the computer in the literal sense. Over time a lot of dust accumulates on the motherboard and other components, and that can cause overheating. I open up my desktop computer once every few months and remove the dust with a pressurized air can. After I do this I can hear the difference as my desktop is much more quiet. For laptops though you need to bring them to a specialized shop. ▲ Collapse
