Move to Apple MacBook Pro Thread poster: Harmen Rijks

Hi, I'm considering moving my Translation environment (Trados Studio 22, Xbench, etc) back from Windows 11 to Windows 11 in a VM (Parallels) on a new MacBook Pro with the M2 chip. Has anyone done this? The problem seems to be that you can not simply copy the files via Laplink PC mover from one Windows environment to another Windows environment on the VM anymore as the underlying format appears to have been changed. Apparently the only way to do it is install everything from fresh. I used to work in a VM set up on a Mac until Trados got to power hungry and it all became turgidly slow. Moved back to Windows on a HP laptop with 32GB internal memory, but the quality of workmanship is so much lower. Things constantly break.... Anyone with experience moving back to Apple? (I only wish Trados would be available on a Mac, and not just via the cloud on a Mac.) ▲ Collapse | | | There are good alternatives for Mac :) | Mar 11, 2023 |
I only wish Trados would be available on a Mac That will never happen. Luckily, there are good alternatives that support Macs with Apple Silicon directly. They use the unified memory directly. Short demo in Dutch: https://youtu.be/JbBxPvhbJqU Note that the tool also processes Trados files.

Hi Hans, Thanks for the tip. I'll have a more in-depth look to see if it matches up to what I can do with Trados. | | | Harmen Rijks United Kingdom Member (2004) English to Dutch TOPIC STARTER Trying to connect CafeTran impossible | Mar 11, 2023 |
CafeTran appears to be stuck in the same Windows 'support' bubble I'm trying to escape. Nothing is clear, logging in via my Pro account on Proz is impossible, help files don't offer any help, linking CafeTran to my ProZ account on a Mac worked, but no link to licence file, etc. Can't see an improvement over Trados so far. | |

| A thing the CTE's developer (or someone else) should do: | Mar 12, 2023 |
Writing a *comprehensive* user's manual in PDF format, and updating it swiftly as soon as a change or a new feature is implemented. The first thing a new potential user usually does is looking for such a manual to see whether CTE actually fits his needs.

You can download them as pdf files. Have to ask the author where his good tutorial Getting comfortable (for beginners) can be found… I got a quick reply:

[Edited at 2023-03-12 01:19 GMT] I tried to watch some of those videos but I found them incomprehensible and unpleasant. So I just jumped in and was delighted to find that like all Mac applications, it was intuitive- I didn't need a manual to get started and over time, since then, just playing around with it, I have been discovering the many things it can do. I'm now using CTE on a regular basis as a working tool | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Move to Apple MacBook Pro Wordfast Pro | Translation Memory Software for Any Platform
