I'm not sure that you're really clear on what escort interpreting is. It's for business; very rarely for tourism. And it's rare that a company will pay to fly an interpreter from one place to another. Generally they will just find an interpreter in the place they want to go. If you've been dreaming of rich tourists essentially taking you on holiday with them, then I think you've been a bit unrealistic!

All escort interpreting means is the bit of interpreting that's not in a highly controlled environment like a conference room. It certainly can be interesting, but what you really need to do is become a good interpreter first, then select more escort-type jobs.

Thanks everyone. Didn't mean to cause confusion. In my admittedly limited research I had seen this type of interpreting called escort interpreting or even less often travel/tour interpreting.

Basically what would be ideal for me is to be able to interpret in either country of my language combo in informal/less formal situations and be able to make my living that way. I suppose that is too idealistic.

Um, I'm still unsure whether one could make a solid living by travel interpreting alone. Any kind of travel interpreting. Must do more research.

Thanks again!

It is called "Escort Interpreting" in the US and it means that you accompany a delegate or high level executive/physician/engineer in their dealings with their foreign counterparts to ease communications. While funny, some people should really get their brains out of the gutter!

No, I did not mean liaison interpreting (which is nothing more than consecutive interpreting ).

Escort interpreting is more than sitting in a bar, Lilian. You have a very negative view of it and I'm confused as to why. The way I know it, it involves a lot of business negotiations, meetings and tours during the day (basically business interpreting) and in the evening if the businessmen wish to relax in a restaurant or bar then so be it.

It's interesting that you refer to businessMEN!

This sounds like a job that was advertised on ProZ a couple of days ago, asking for "hostesses". Fortunately, it was removed after I complained.
