interpreting quality and equivalence in interpreting

hello, I'd like to ask. what is or are the indicator(s) of interpreting quality? how do we measure the accuracy of it? what is equivalence in interpreting?

Hello Kurnia,

interpreting quality is influenced by many factors. A good interpreter is not merely a language professional, but a communications professional.

Ideally, he/she fully understands the source (language and content), a sort of "image" forms in his mind and he/she can transfer that "image" into the target language with all its connotations. He/she is pleasant to listen to and sounds confident.

CONTENT (completeness / accuracy / coherence & plausability):

- Did the interpretation render correctly and precisely the original ideas/information of the speech? (C/S)
- Was the interpretation complete? (C/S)
- Were the main ideas and the structure rendered? (C/S)
- Were there important omissions with an impact on meaning of speech? (C/S)
- Were there too many details missing? (C/S)
- Useless/dangerous additions? (C/S)
- Was the logic of the original speech clearly recognizable? (C)
- Was the interpretation coherent? (C/S)
- Important contresens? (C/S)
- Knowledge of passive language? (C/S)

PRESENTATION/FORM (active language/communication skills):

- Mastering of the target language (correct grammar, equivalence in style, idiomatic expressions, lexicon, interferences from the source language)? (C/S)
- Correct/corresponding register? (C/S)
- Terminology? (C/S)
- Articulation? (C/S)
- Accent? (C/S)
- Rhythm? (C/S)
- Speed? (C/S)
- Use of the voice (prosody)? Modulation? (C/S)
- Is interpretation pleasant, convincing and engaged? (C/S)
- Eye contact? (C)
- Fluency of the delivery (decalage? no abrupt pauses, no unnecessary hesitations)? (S)
- Complete sentences (S)
- Stamina? (S)
- Microphone discipline? (S)
- Adequate body language? (C)
- Dress code? (C)

ANALYTICAL SKILLS (intention, interpretation strategies):

- Simple repetition of words or effort of re-elaboration of ideas? (C/S)
- Was the intention of speaker correctly rendered so that the message has the impact intended by the speaker? (C/S)
- Use of interpretation strategies (paraphrasing, anticipation, output control, capacity of synthesising, generalizations?) (S)
- Use of strategic interpretation tools (paraphrasing, output control, capacity of synthesising, generalizations)? (C)
- Capacity of self-correction? (C/S)
- Note taking technique? (C)
- Time of delivery (shorter/longer than original speech)? (C)
- Complete sentences (C/S)
