The client asked me to fill it out for them but what does the field 'exempt from backup withholding' mean?

I don't understand the instruction very well sorry...

I am a sole proprietor.

Back-up withholding is usually required when an individual has not reported income from interest or other sources to the IRS. That individual is then notified by IRS that they will be subject to back-up withholding, they also notify financial institutions to start withholding interest, to be submitted to the IRS.
So you would normally check that you are not subject to back-up withholding.

Hi Yoanna,
I just filled one of those. That section does not apply to us.
If you're a sole proprietor, all they want is your name, your
DBA if you have one, and your SSN.
