There are probably all kinds of problems in the pipeline that stem directly or indirectly from the lockdowns of varying severity that have been in place during the last year or so. See more There are probably all kinds of problems in the pipeline that stem directly or indirectly from the lockdowns of varying severity that have been in place during the last year or so. While there’s not a great deal most of us can do to help those who are currently badly affected in financial terms or to tackle the stuff that’ll be coming down the line, what we might do is help the disadvantaged kids who’ve missed out on a lot of schooling – and whose parents are often unable to provide the necessary support – to catch up on their learning. There are probably already many informal schemes in place for those who’d like to help out, and I thought I’d tell you what we’re doing here in southern Germany in case anyone’s looking for ideas.
The project is called “Pauken im Park” (“Pauken” being the German word for “swot”/”cram”) and is self-explanatory. No information on the Internet, as we only started it last week after slogging through the red tape and waiting for at least a bit of decent weather. The local newspaper will be there next week, so I’ll post a follow-up link if anyone’s interested.
Basic idea: one adult, two kids (from the same family at present to ensure compliance with the local regulations), outdoors, benches, masks, distancing, whiteboards, every Saturday for 90 minutes. We’re gradually recruiting more volunteers, none of whom are teachers, and I’ve been assured by the authorities that there is no lack of children who want and need help. The situation is actually worse than we thought it was.
Two kids because one is exhausting for both parties. The red tape varies from country to country. The reason it took us a while to get it up and running here is that it has to be organised through some sort of organisation on liability grounds and that anyone tutoring the kids has to apply for an “erweitertes Führungszeugnis” (extended certificate of good conduct). The municipality arranges for the certificates, and youth workers bring along the kids they think need the most help.
Government and NSPCC-type schemes for these kids won't be in place for months to come - and will involve more red tape - which is why we're trying to do something on a more informal basis, if only to bridge the gap. ▲ Collapse

Schools should never have been closed because of Covid-19. It's generally accepted that children rarely get very ill from the coronavirus yet school closures and lockdowns have been ordered - and accepted by the public - almost as a matter of course. People need to take to the streets and demand their rights back, including children's right to an education. Otherwise who knows hos much longer this nonsense will go on for?

Dass gerade Kinder unter den Folgen der Corona-Pandemie zu leiden haben, ist hinlänglich bekannt. Ihnen fehlt seit Monaten so vieles, nicht nur die sozialen Kontakte zu ihren Altersgenossen, vor allem den Mitschülern. Interkultur hat eine Idee und weiß Abhilfe: Pauken im Park
Unterricht aber fiel häufg aus oder fand als Distanzunterricht mit Hilfe von Computern und Internet oder als Wechselunterricht statt. Es entstanden mitunter große Lücken, vor allem beim Lernen. Wie aber diese aufholen?
Eine Idee hierfür entwickelte man jetzt in Germersheim beim Verein Interkultur. Bei Interkultur können sich Erwachsene melden, die freiwillig einzelnen Kindern helfen wollen. Sehr individuell also findet die Unterstützung statt, bei der Erledigung der Hausaufgaben oder bei Nachfragen zu Fächern wie Mathe, Deutsch, Fremdsprachen.
Wie das funktioniert, konnte man am Samstag im „Freiluft-Klassenzimmer“ am Haus Interkultur im Stadtpark Lamotte erleben. Gofran (13) und ihr Bruder Mohammed (11) sitzen an einem Tisch und schreiben eifrig mit. Ihnen gegenüber, natürlich ebenfalls mit Maske und in gebotenem Abstand, haben Ursula Schackert-Blender und ihr Mann Wolfgang Blender Platz genommen. Die beiden hatten in Germersheim eine Arztpraxis und gehören zum Verein Interkultur. Spontan haben sie sich als Freiwillige für diese Aufgabe gemeldet. Sie beantworten zunächst Fragen der beiden Schüler, die die Geschwister-Scholl-Realschule plus in Germersheim besuchen.
Kinder sind mit Feuereifer dabei
Tony Tranter-Krstev versucht mit Joubbudi (Klasse 5 der Richard-von-Weizsäcker Realschule plus) und Maram aus der vierten Klasse der Eduard-Orth-Grundschule die Zahlen in die englische Sprache zu übersetzen. Auch einfache Mathe-Aufgaben werden gelöst. Als Hilfsmittel stehen Whiteboards zur Verfügung. Die Kinder sind mit Feuereifer bei der Sache. Sie lassen sich auch nicht ablenken, als Spaziergänger durch den Park wandern und interessiert zuschauen, was sich da so alles tut.
Der gebürtige Engländer Tranter-Krstev, den alle nur Tony nennen, ist auch so etwas wie der Motor und Organisator der Aktion, die sich „Pauken im Park“ nennt. Die Idee hierzu wurde kürzlich erst geboren, als der Verein Interkultur von der Stadtverwaltung die Anfrage erhalten hatte, ob man benachteiligten Kindern nicht nach der Pandemie helfen könne, die entstandenen Lerndefizite aufzuarbeiten. Aber, so Tony, warum sollte man erst auf das Ende der Pandemie warten? Fangen wir doch gleich an,beachten die Corona-Regeln und unterrichten einfach im Freien.
Fragen der Kinder geben „Stundenplan“ vor
„Pauken im Park“ war gleich der Arbeitstitel für das Projekt. Stewart Whyte, beruflich als Dolmetscher tätig, nahm dann Kontakt mit Khadija Manoudi vom Familienbüro der Stadt Germersheim auf, die ebenfalls mit benachteiligten Kindern arbeitet. Nun brauchte man noch freiwillige Erwachsene, die samstags jeweils etwa zwei Stunden mitarbeiten konnten.
Doch diese meldeten sich bald, mehr als zehn Personen stehen in den Startlöchern, um „Pauken im Park“ zu betreuen. Neben Tony, Ursula Schackert-Blender und Wolfgang Blender, die bereits ein Führungszeugnis vorlegen konnten und mit der Arbeit schon begonnen haben, kommen ab nächsten Samstag noch weitere „Pauker“ hinzu. Wobei der Begriff „Pauker“ nicht abschrecken darf. Sind es doch eher Lernpaten oder Lernbegleiter, die auf die Bedürfnisse der Kinder ganz genau eingehen können.
Einen festen Lehrplan kann es hierfür nicht geben. Auch die Methoden werden wohl ganz unterschiedlich sein. Man knüpft an die Frage der wissbegierigen Kinder an und greift deren Wünsche und Bedürfnisse auf.
Tony Tranter-Krstev, der selbst Vorstandsmitglied im Verein Interkultur ist, freut sich auf weitere Kinder, die auch auf Vermittlung der Caritas in Germersheim an „Pauken im Park“ teilnehmen möchten.
Samstags ist der Park die Schule
Immer samstags ab 12 Uhr geht es los. Ein Lehrender begleitet maximal zwei Schüler. Wobei sich auch die Zeiten ändern können und sich an die Wünsche der Lehrenden und Lernwilligen anpassen. Alles ist sehr flexibel, richtet sich nach den Bedürfnissen derer, die während der Corona-Pandemie (und vielleicht auch sonst) etwas zu kurz gekommen sind. Auf Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund ist das Angebot übrigens ganz und gar nicht beschränkt. Jeder darf kommen und mitmachen, der Hilfe braucht und sich über Unterstützung freut. ▲ Collapse

Must have been a slow news week, because the regional TV people came along on Saturday to film us helping the kids. For anyone who's interested, it's on SWR Rheinland-Pfalz today (Tuesday) at 6:45 pm. No idea what they're showing or whether it's 10 seconds or 15 minutes.
It could take a few days for this post to be approved, so the whole thing will probably have been and gone before anyone reads this ...
