But why does this happen?

You mean this Preview, right?

I have no idea why this would work but using Project > Export fails. You didn't move any files after project creation, right?

Blocked by the existing file in use Sep 7, 2021

You may have exported the translation before and left the file opened it in Word. If you try to export it from CafeTran with the same file name again, the system may block it because the exported file already exists and it is in use by another application.

Also, try to increase Java memory for CafeTran in Edit > Preferences > Memory tab > Java memory field (e.g from the default value of 2048 to 4096 if you have at least 8 GB of RAM in your computer). More memory for CT will ensure t

YEs- that preview and no, I don't move any files after the project has been created.

When I get to the end of the translation and CT invites me to export it, and I click on "export", the screen blinks for a fraction of a second and nothing is exported.

This only happens sometimes. Weird.

Subfolders maybe? (replying to Igor -updated) Sep 7, 2021

I have set Java at 5000 since several months ago. I have 16 GB of RAM. So I don't think that is the problem.

The "export" feature does not seem to depend on the size of the file; in one day (yesterday) I translated 2 very small files (less than a page each). One of them exported correctly and the other one didn't. So I don't think file size is the problem.

I never try to export a translation until it's 100% complete. If I want to see what it looks like (to check pagination, fonts, etc.) I use "preview current document".

Here's a thought that might or might not be relevant:

For my convenience I keep the original file, sent to me by the client, in a folder (let's call it Folder A) that contains everything relating to that particular client (other jobs, invoices, etc. for that client). Folder A is several levels down in a hierarchy.

I keep all my CT processing files and folders, for all translations, in a nested subfolder elsewhere, several levels down (let's call it Folder B). Folder B is also several levels down in a different, separate hierarchy.

For my own workflow reasons I need to keep these 2 hierarchies separate.

To translate the original file sent to me by the client, I drag and drop it, from Folder A, on to CT.

At that point CT creates its own working folder and files in Folder B. From that point on, CT does all its work within Folder B.

When I finish the translation and export it, CT gives me the option of exporting it to wherever I want. This is very convenient and is one of the many good features of CT.

But sometimes this doesn't work - CT doesn't generate a file to export and doesn't give me the option of choosing where to save it.

So I'm thinking that perhaps CT doesn't always like exporting from a particular hierarchy of folders (containing Folder B) to anywhere else. Or maybe sometimes it is unable to generate a file to export.

That's just a hypothesis. And as I said, it isn't a major issue for me; I'm just curious as to why it happens.

Remember export folder Sep 7, 2021

To make sure that CT exports to the valid and existing export folder, activate the "Remember export folder" option in Edit > Preferences > Workflow tab, after the successful export.

By the way, you can export (just like preview) anytime during your current project - not only at the end of the translation.

Thanks Igor - I'll try that
