Paul has commented in several threads that he would welcome some ideas for new apps for SDL Studio. Here's an idea that a few people might like.

It is to create a window that is split horizontally with the source text of the current segment in the upper part and the translation in the bottom part. The window should always remain on top and initially be positioned centrally in the editor window (where the segments are) and at the top. The window would have buttons at the top of norma

It is to create a window that is split horizontally with the source text of the current segment in the upper part and the translation in the bottom part. The window should always remain on top and initially be positioned centrally in the editor window (where the segments are) and at the top. The window would have buttons at the top of normally used functions (concordance search, confirm, copy source to target, clear segment, etc), preferably in the form of a QAT so that commands can be added or removed.

The two parts of the window would at all time mirror the content of the active segment, and vice versa.
The window would be resizeable and the split would also be moveable.

The window could be displayed or hidden by a new button in the View tab, User Interface panel, as shown here

The editor window would look like this

That should satisfy all of the people who are wanting above and below segment translation instead of the side by side that is in studio.

All we need now is a developer to write the app.

Regards,
Ben

I would love to see this above-below option!! Jul 13, 2015

For one second I thought this was a screenshot of Studio 2015 ... I was so happy to finally see this feature.
But unfortunately no

I would love to see this above-below option!!

If it's no pop-up window, but inside the editor view, it's even better,
but if someone can make an app like this I will be more than happy.

This would solve my pet peeve with Trados Studio. More important than any bells and whistles.

That's the way memoQ does it:

In the case of Studio (assuming OpenExchange developers are allowed to modify the editor's layout), it would be complicated by the fact the status column is located in the middle.

One more idea Jul 13, 2015

I don't know if it's more of an ideal for Open Exchange developers or Trados developers, but it would be great for the Studio autosuggest feature to catch also proper names and numbers.
As far as I know, presently only Wordfast Classic offers this great feature, but it's immensely useful.

Supporting pro-lingua here. This function is one of the things that I really miss in Trados. Wordfast autosuggests proper names and numbers. This is very helpful.

Status column Jul 14, 2015

In Studio 2015 the annoying status column is still stuck in the middle?
I thought 2015 was about Personalization of the layout.

Pro-lingua:
Names > you can already do that with Autotext or AutoSuggest Dictionary
and I think in 2015 the AutoSuggest is improved with suggestions from the currect TM.

I didn't upgrade to 2015 yet.
The new Autocorrect en AutoSuggest features seem nice, but the personalization of the layout is more important to me.
- Above-below editing
- Option to move the status column to the side

This is true, it can be done ... but you have to do it.

Wordfast does this automatically - no need to do anything.

A better calendar function Jul 14, 2015

I would like to be able to see what projects I need to deliver on a particular day and at a particular time.

I would also like to be able to have the description of the project visible so I know what it is I'm translating. Most of my projects are identified by the client's order number, which means I have to add a brief description into this "name" field.

When I have large projects, I also take on smaller projects. It would be very helpful to have some kind of overview to help in planning the number of words still available over a given period. By this I mean if I have a project of say 20,000 words comfortably spread over x number of days, how many more words could I achieve in a given day to make up my average words per day. Does that make sense? i.e. some kind of calculating tool that says x words a day available, x words a day already taken. Obviously this is only an average as projects differ but when viewing a file you can see the difficulty level and calculate whether it is do-able or not.

So, as the German's say "Gleich drei Wünsche auf einmal!".

Linux app Jul 17, 2015

I am a Studio user, not a programmer (sorry), but wouldn't it be an idea to devellop an app that makes Studio compatible for Linux? So, a Linux app!

Make-It-Work App Jul 19, 2015

It would be very nice to have an app that makes SDL Trados Sudio work without all of those dozen messages like 'SDL does not...', 'Cannot active Trados...', 'Problems with Trados TB...', 'Trados TM not compatible...' etc.

Does anybody have any end in sight for all these SDL bugs?

I just bought SDL 2015. What did I pay for?

I just bought SDL 2015. What did I pay for?

- Not only I cannot install the Jobs plugin, because the installation wizard does not return any navigation buttons;
- Not only the quality of localization is poor (in Russian, e.g. the Batch task menu uses different target words for the same source command (Update -> "Обновить" and "Обновление"), plus not all lines have been localized - some remain in English);
- Not only I cannot use other plugins that are not ready for 2015 yet, even though I used them for 2014;
- Not only I still cannot merge sdlxliff files at any moment;
- Not only I still cannot confirm all segments so that they go to TM, but not just change their status;
- Not only the status column becomes even harder to recognize what the status is (one must have eagle eyes to see the difference between Draft and Translated). Why not use color coding? Is it much more difficult than adding those hardly recognizable check marks?
- Not only SDL removed my 2011/2014 licenses so that I cannot use operable product any longer.
- The most important thing is that SDL do not reply. This makes me think that they do not care at all.

People form SDL,
Please advise me on how can I get my money back for this SDL Unfinished Stuff 2015 and recover my 2011/2014 licenses.

Thank you

Above-below editing/Option to move the status column to the side Jul 19, 2015

I thought 2015 was about Personalization of the layout.

Actually, this column is now larger and still non-adjustable and unmovable, so that in the course of translation, you have to jump back and forth between source to target over it, making the process quite cumbersome. Awful ergonomics.

My thoughts exactly. Should I note that the above/below option would not allow sticking the status column smack in-between segments...

TOPIC STARTER
It was only a suggestion... Jul 19, 2015

@ Sandra an Kenneth,

My first post was only a suggestion to get things and discussion started.

In principle I can see no reason why the status column cannot go on the right hand side together with the other column that already is on the right hand side and with nothing between the above and below source and target segments.

Regards,
Ben

The status column is even larger in Studio 2015?? Unbelievable.
Good I didn't upgrade to 2015 yet, or not at all.

Sandra& Kenneth wrote:

Exactly. With the above/below option like Ben suggested, we also finally get rid of the annoying status column between source and target.

I just don't understand why SDL didn't implement the above/below option and/or the option to move the status column to the right.
So many (ex) SDL Trados users want this option,
and all the other CATs have it, so it wouldn't be that difficult to create.

Proz jobs inside Studio (?), Time Tracker, a Calendar, all nice,
but it's a normal ergonomic layout I want...

(and so many other people -
it's the top 1 request of Studio users, but there's also people (like me) that leave Trados for this or don't even purchase Studio because there's no above/below option.
I think SDL misses out on a lot of old/new customers...
