Irgendwo hinten am Pincio, oder schon in Villa Borghese, ruhen zwei Sarkophagdeckel aus unedlem Stein zwischen den Büschen im Freien. Sie stellen keine Kostbarkeit dar, sie liegen umher. Lang hingestreckt lagert auf ihnen das Ehepaar, das sich einst zum letzten Andenken hat abbilden lassen. Man sieht viele solcher Sarkophagdeckel in Rom; aber in keinem Museum und in keiner Kirche machen sie solchen Eindruck wie hier unter den Bäumen, wo sich die Figuren wie auf einer Landpartie ausgestreckt haben und eben aus einem kleinen Schlaf erwacht zu sein scheinen, der zweitausend Jahre gewährt hat.
Sie haben sich auf den Ellbogen gestützt und sehen einander an. Es fehlt nur der Korb mit Käse, Früchten und Wein zwischen ihnen.
Die Frau trägt eine Frisur mit kleinen Locken, – gleich wird sie sie ordnen, nach der letzten Mode vor dem Einschlafen. Und sie lächeln einander an; lang, sehr lang. Du siehst weg: und noch immer tun sie es ohne Ende.
Dieser treue, brave, bürgerliche, verliebte Blick hat die Jahrhunderte überstanden; er ist im alten Rom ausgesandt worden und kreuzt heute dein Auge.
Wundere dich nicht darüber, daß er vor dir andauert; daß sie nicht wegsehen oder die Augen senken: sie werden nicht steinern dadurch, sondern menschlich.
Translation - German Sarcophagus lids
Somewhere on the Pincio, or perhaps already in the Villa Borghese, two sarcophagus lids of ordinary stone rest among the bushes in the open air.
They are not precious objects, they simply lie there. Reclining on top the couple rest who long ago asked to be depicted for everlasting memory. Many such sarcophagus lids may be seen in Rome; but there is no museum or church in which they impress as much as they do here under the trees where, as if on a country outing, the figures have stretched out and apparently just woken from a brief sleep which lasted two thousand years.
They lean on their elbows and look at each other. Only a basket with cheese, fruit and wine is missing between them.
The woman has a hairstyle of small ringlets – she is about to arrange them according to the latest fashion before falling asleep. And they smile at each other; for a long time, a very long time. You look away: and still without end they smile at each other.
This faithful, honest, stalwart, amorous look has outlived the centuries; beginning in ancient Rome it meets your eye today.
Do not be surprised that it continues before you, that they do not look away or lower their eyes: they thus do not turn into stone but become human.

Source text - English No-one should expect a neat and finely-wrought story from me because I'm only a novice when it comes to the art of story-telling. A 'bromach' (colt/boor) is what Dic Ó Siadhaile calls any chancer who works with wood but who has never learned his trade properly. And that is exactly what I am too when it comes to the writing project I have undertaken here. I would be ten times more adept and knowledgeable if I was working with the spade, the shovel or the ploughshare itself. I'll give the story of this book my best shot, however. No-one can ask for any more than this - that a person does his best.
Translation - German Und man darf von mir keine
formvollendet gestaltete Geschichte erwarten, denn
schließlich weiß ich nichts von der Kunst, Geschichten
zu erzählen. Dic Ó Siadhaile sagt, wer mit Holz arbeitet,
ohne sein Handwerk ordentlich gelernt zu haben,
ist ein Pfuscher. Und genau das bin auch ich, jedenfalls
im Hinblick auf das Schreiben, so wie ich es mir
vorgenommen hab. Zehnmal geschickter und beschlagener
wär ich, würd ich mit dem Spaten oder mit der
Schaufel arbeiten oder selbst mit der Pflugschar. Indes,
ich will für die Geschichte in diesem Buch mein Bestes
geben. Mehr als dass man sein Bestes gibt, kann einem
keiner abverlangen.

Source text - German Auf dem Feld am Waldrand ließ sich der leuchtende
Zauber in der Krone eines Kirschbaums nieder. Im
selben Moment färbte sich der Baum in sattes Grün.
Aus den Zweigen sprossen Blüten wie Perlen. Wie
Puderzucker rieselte ihr Duft auf die Erde hinab.
Gefesselt von der Magie des wundersamen Vogels,
überlegte der Mann nicht lange. Er rannte ins Haus
zurück, zog sich den wärmsten Pullover an, der grad
zu finden war, stieg in seine Stiefel, schlüpfte in den
Mantel und schnürte sich den Rucksack um. Dann
löschte er das Feuer im Kamin, die Kerzen auf dem
Tisch und schritt hinaus in die zähe Kälte. Die Tür
fiel ins Schloss. Er stapfte die Treppe hinunter auf den
vereisten Weg, der zum Wald führte.
Translation - English The shining miracle alighted on the crown of a cherry tree in the field at the edge of the forest. Immediately the tree turned a lush green. Blossoms like pearls burst forth from its branches. Their fragrance trickling to the ground like icing sugar.
Enchanted by the magic of the fabulous bird, the man did not hesitate for long. He ran back into the house, pulled on the warmest sweater he could find, stepped into his boots, put on his coat and hoisted his rucksack. He quenched the fire in the hearth and the candles on the table and stepped out into the bitter cold. The door shut behind him. He stomped down the steps to the icy path that led to the forest.
