Source text - English A few years ago, Mercedes Carnethon, a diabetes researcher at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, found herself pondering a conundrum. Obesity is the primary risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, yet sizable numbers of normal-weight people also develop the disease. Why?
In research conducted to answer that question, Dr. Carnethon discovered something even more puzzling: Diabetes patients of normal weight are twice as likely to die as those who are overweight or obese. That finding makes diabetes the latest example of a medical phenomenon that mystifies scientists. They call it the obesity paradox.
In study after study, overweight and moderately obese patients with certain chronic diseases often live longer and fare better than normal-weight patients with the same ailments. The accumulation of evidence is inspiring some experts to re-examine long-held assumptions about the association between body fat and disease.

Source text - English In recognition of the fact that forests in developing countries are key to mitigating climate change, the international community is promoting schemes that reward developing countries and landholders for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). REDD takes a step forward to also include conservation, sustainable forest management and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
While current REDD readiness activities are predominately financed through public funding, the involvement of the private sector would help mobilise a high level of finance in the medium and longer term. Therefore some countries are creating a new form of private property — the carbon (sequestration) right, or ‘credit’ — that can be bought and sold on national or international markets (see Carbon rights in Brazil and Carbon rights in Australia).

Source text - English Some media reporting has oversimplified what is often a complex reality. Not every acquisition is a ‘land grab’ – much depends on local context, the terms of the lease, how it was obtained, and local reactions to it. If they are properly structured, genuine agricultural investments by operators with a strong track record can create opportunities for recipient countries and local people, bringing capital, know-how, jobs, market access and infrastructure development.
But large land deals carry big risks. People may lose the land that has supported their livelihoods for generations, with negative impacts on their food security and sense of justice. The jobs created in return may be few, short- lived and low-paid.
When investors do not deliver on their promises, recipient countries bear significant opportunity costs. And the massive scale of some reported land acquisitions raises serious questions as to the likelihood that the deals will translate into viable investments without sustained public subsidies. For example, some recent biofuel projects in Mozambique and Tanzania have folded or been converted to other land uses.

Source text - English Mr Stink stank. He also stunk. And if it is correct English to say he stinked, then he stinked as well. He was the stinkiest stinky stinker who ever lived.
A stink is the worst type of smell. A stink is worse than a stench. And a stench is worse than a pong. And a pong is worse than a whiff. And a whiff can be enough to make your nose wrinkle.
It wasn't Mr Stink's fault that he stank. He was a tramp, after all. He didn't have a home and so he never had the opportunity to have a proper wash like you and me. After a while the smell just got worse and worse. Here is a picture of Mr Stink.

My name is Zhiyan Ma, and I've been a full-time freelance translator for more than 3 years.

For example, when I was a project manager of the School of Continuing Education, Tshinghua University, cooperated with IBM, we provided a training program for Schneider Electronic, every document was bilingual, and I did all the translation, including the complex legal documents. And I published bilingual newsletters four times a year while working for Chi Heng Foundation, a Hong Kong-based NGO as Communication Officer.
I graduated from the University of Edinburgh, having completed a MSc in Management of Training and Development last in 2009, and got my first master degree from Tshinghua University in International Relations in 2005.
