"barrel" di sini adalah tabung yang digunakan untuk mengebor di mana bibir tabung yang melubangi bergerigi untuk memudahkan penetrasi ke tanah (check google for image pls). Dengan begitu, "core barrel" adalah mata bor berbentuk tabung yang menghasilkan sampel berbentuk silinder/core.

"core splits" adalah potongan sampel itu yang biasanya dibelah dua; satu dikirim ke lab, satu disimpan sebagai rujukan.
