Discussion

Maciek Drobka Jul 28, 2008:
And discussing whether and how translating into a non-native language influences rates is a bit of a side issue in this context, don't you think?
Maciek Drobka Jul 28, 2008:
(Please note I am not saying every Polish native speaker will produce c%$p on an into English job. In fact, I have seen unbelievable English c%$p produced by English native speakers.)
Maciek Drobka Jul 28, 2008:
Besides, people don't have to work Polish>English to answer questions in this language pair.
Also, if a client wants to take the risk of receiving c%$p by using a Polish native speaker for an into English job, that's their problem I should think.
Maciek Drobka Jul 28, 2008:
I have seen it time and again in other language pairs. That's for starters.
Maciek Drobka Jul 28, 2008:
@ stefanek: In case you don't follow ProZ.com too closely (I don't know about 'the market' as a whole): translating into a non-native language is a practice not limited to Polish translators (and then only to SOME Polish translators).

I don't mean to go on about this but really only native English speakers should be doing this. This is exactly why we should ONLY be translating into our native languages.

I'm tired of correcting poor translations rendered by non-native speakers!!

yes I have seen some unbelievable c**p from so-called English "translators" - that's yet another issue of trying to convince people that to be a translator, some kind of academic qualification in translating might be useful.....
Peer comment(s):

neutral Maciek Drobka : If you don't like the other suggestions, disagree with them instead of venting your anger in your own explanation box. And sorry to hear you're so tired. Any more examples of bad translations you've corrected?

it's just very frustrating that Polish native speakers still work Pl>En. In other language combinations this is just not accepted, nor should it be. Not only is it unprofessional and bad practice, but they are driving down rates unfairly.
neutral Michal Labedzki : you should seriously consider finding another, less frustrating job
