To make glue-up easy, spread a coat of glue on
both sides of the grid with a roller (B).
Cut the skins from 1/4-in. or 1/2-in. plywood or MDF,
making them about 1/2 in. larger than the assembled
gridwork. Glue the skins to both sides of the
grid, using bowed cauls to distribute clamp pressure
evenly (C).
Once the glue has dried, rout the skins flush to
the core with a laminate bit (D). To dress up the
shelf, you can veneer its surfaces or cover it with
laminate or leather. Adding solid-wood lippings is
an effective way to conceal the raw edges.
