"Serious music"-серьёзная музыка, but high art is the art which covers aesthetic contemplation. For ex. Ballet and opera, the link for academic art does not say anything about music, opera or ballet.

High art vs Low art High art is a relevant term here.
High art - covers aesthetic contemplation, while low art belongs to functional and has low value.
Здесь разница в том что академическое-означает эстетическое, (from an aesthetic point of view) и имеет гораздо более высокую ценность. Академический в этом контексте имеет значение "ценность", эстетическая ценность, от которого мы получаем эстетическое наслаждение.
In short, it is more intellectual than functional.
For ex;
1. More intellectual, aesthetic one, high value - (академический)- Fine art -изобр. исскуство
2. Functional, low value-(не академический)-Craft -ремесло, ручной [кустарный] труд

Как мне кажется, здесь "академическое" означает не "classical", а "world art", which is known and taught all over the world. Например, фольклор-то, что рождается в народе, а Балет — академическое искусство, мировое.
Но есть случаи, при переводе "академическое" иногда переводится как "Classic"

Tatiana is right Only it's "classicAL" ballet and opera. Academic is routinely used with respect to painting and architecture in English, but not to music and such.
