English term

embattled

English to Russian Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
However, Georgia's protestors charge that allegations of a future invasion are simply fear mongering by Saakashvili. The opposition argues the embattled president is trying to distract attention from domestic problems.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): gutbuster

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Daria Isakova May 29, 2009:
Michael Korovkin May 29, 2009:
Thanks Levan!.... Gutbuster, All the, admittedly delicious, stuff that you've listed is either more or less available in Italy in its Italian version (fairly similar to the Georgian one) or is relatively easy to cook/make(adjika). Khinkali are a different matter: I make them maybe once a year; and it's so much hassle to make them as the doctor ordered that I almost feel sorry eating them afterwards! In Georgia, someone else sweats away making them for you, and that makes the whole difference.
gutbuster May 29, 2009:
Michael Korovkin, there are other yummy things, too: satsivi, lobio, Аджабсандали, бухлома, Баклажаны по-грузински, home-made adjika that has a wonderful taste when spread on a slice of fresh lavash to go with a stewed meat delicacy.
Levan Namoradze (asker) May 29, 2009:
Michael, nevertheless, thank you for your kind understanding! As for the khinkali, just try to travel to Georgia and trust me, I will do my best in order "to remind" that to you! :-)
Michael Korovkin May 29, 2009:
you've absolutely nothing to apologise for, Levan your choice is perfectly legit!

(to change the subject to culinary rather than linguistic: I miss khinkali so much! Strange, the things you miss about a country...)
Levan Namoradze (asker) May 29, 2009:
Коллеги, Я прошу прощения за выбор (особенно у Michael Korovkin) - я редко иду против мнения большинства. Просто, выбранный вариант, по моему, больше подходил во всех смыслах и отношениях. И ведь я перевожу не на Русский. :-)
Michael Korovkin May 29, 2009:
a perfectly good choice, Levan, although I would've chosen tschingite's "zagnannyj".
Doesn't really matter, long as you stay in this paradigm.

1 MAINLY JOURNALISM experiencing a lot of problems and likely to be defeated or destroyed:
He called on the nation to give the embattled president a chance.

Igor Savenkov May 28, 2009:
erika rubinstein May 28, 2009:
Michael Korovkin May 28, 2009:
Erica, take it from the old hand: To insist on the error of one's ways is a greater sin than the sin originally committed.
Usage is important. I have a dictionary that says "ebattled" = колесо с зубцами. Embattled is used as used-up, careworn, even "beat up", Затырканный, короче. The Misha for me is not the extreme measure of linguistic acumen (as you, somewhat flustered put, it): he is just a respected colleague I happen to agree with on this particular instance. We are known to have disagreed with each other in the past, aren't we, Misha?
