French term

chiffres clés

French to English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Calling all Yanks!

I need the AMERICAN English translation for this phrase, or at least reassurance that "key figures" is not exclusively British. FYI: American Gogle results with "key figures" all seem to refer to people, not numbers.

Context:

Pour votre information les ***chiffres clés*** de XXX, sont les suivants :
Notre niveau de dépenses mensuelles est de XXX €
Notre niveau de Cout de vente mensuelle est de XXX €

Thanks!

Discussion

rkillings Nov 9, 2007:
Heard the expression "facts and figures"?
rkillings Nov 9, 2007:
You can never trust what you've "never heard" -- you weren't paying attention. 'Key figures' is perfectly common American English for featured statistics, even if *more* common in reference to prominent personalities (in history, in a dispute, etc.).
Adam Lankamer Nov 8, 2007:
not numbers,... but financial data ;-), amounts
Expialidocio (X) (asker) Nov 8, 2007:
I've double-checked links and search results, and all sources of the term "key figures" appear to be European in origin (OK, I didn't look at all 2 million, but...). I think I'll wait for people in the U.S. to start waking up and see if they can confirm or deny. As an American, I've just never heard the word "figure" used to refer to numbers, except in the term "six-figure salary."
Adam Lankamer Nov 8, 2007:
in your context (financial information) "figures" is just OK - please follow my link: almost 2 million Google hits, are they all British?

agree Charles Hawtrey (X) : See http://www.microsoft.com/msft/earnings/FY06/earn_rel_q4_06.m... for use of 'key' - admittedly not with products, but the sense is there. That's a US company...

agree dearbarbie (X) : defo 'key figures' - it can be people as well as numbers but 'key numbers' simply doesn't sound right imo

agree Attorney DC Bar : As a still-breathingAmerican source, I would say "key figures" to refer to numbers, 'deformation profesionnelle' notwithstanding...

agree veratek : it's fine, I think - do a Google search on "key figures" "dollars" site:.gov - if you want official examples

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all who contributed to this answer, especially vera-tech whose suggested search criteria finally produced an actual American example of the term "key figures" in use. I had searched previously with "dollars" in addition to "key figures," but adding the *.gov site specification is what finally got the job done. Thanks again!"
