I thought it might be interesting and instructive to find out what your favourite add-on is. I don’t mean the usual translator’s stock-in-trade (dictionaries, glossaries, CAT tools and the like) but the sort of little application you find yourself using time and time again in the course of the day. Something which speeds up and facilitates your offline and online experience.

What’s so special about GDS? It’s a good question, especially if you consider its components separately:
- Desktop search: IMHO Copernic does it better.
- Launching programmes: a little application called Launchy does this very well.
- Web search: Google is the gold standard but many of us prefer a more spartan interface. (I rather like a Google work-in-progress called Searchmash.)

So why bother with GDS? On account of one little gadget which was added almost as an afterthought – the Quick Search Box. Just press Ctrl twice at any time and up comes an all-purpose window which will take you just about anywhere you want. There are one or two settings you can change under “Display” in the GDS “Preferences” but I won’t complicate matters here.

To sum up: this is a killer app for me. a) It is so unobtrusive (double press Ctr brings up the window, double press Ctrl again and it disappears) and b) it covers so many different needs.

What about you? I would be very interested to know.

Examine! Nov 10, 2006

Hi,
Found the search tool Examine back in 1994 on a Bulletin Board System (this was before the golden age of the Net).

I had realized that I needed a search tool, and downloaded three or four to evaluate, discovered Examine and never looked back!

I still use it for searching in folders with project specific glossaries, reference material, etc, although I also have a commercial indexing system (ISYS, not sure if it is still available on the market) for the bulk of

I had realized that I needed a search tool, and downloaded three or four to evaluate, discovered Examine and never looked back!

I still use it for searching in folders with project specific glossaries, reference material, etc, although I also have a commercial indexing system (ISYS, not sure if it is still available on the market) for the bulk of my glossaries and other reference material.

Examine is shareware, and can be found here:
http://www.examine32.com/

I have downloaded and evaluated many, many search tools since then, but never found anything as simple and handy as Examine!

Have a nice weekend!

Thanks Cecilia Nov 10, 2006

I'll certainly have a look at that!
Incidentally the link for the search engine I mentioned is (logically enough): www.searchmash.com.
Have a nice weekend!

exalead one: desktop Nov 10, 2006

It's a search tool for both your desktop and the net. It has a very pretty interface, but its power comes from its capacity to narrow searches based on a wealth of criteria, and it can display previews and/or text versions of the search results, and also provides a clickable link to open a particular search result.

It's FREEEEEE! I replaced FileHand by it - and never looked back...... See more

If you simply go to www.exalead.fr, you can also find a link to their gadgets at the bottom of the page. They are mainly search bars for your browser, but I haven't tried them - yet.

Hi everyone and thanks for your feedback.
I find your choices most illuminating but - forgive me - could I refer you to the title of the thread?
Pablo: the tool you mention (http://joshmadison.net/software/convert/) looks great but is it the one thing you could not do without? Just asking! Besides, it's not strictly speaking an add-on.

Cecilia: very interesting choice. In what way way is Examine superior to the other (free) desktop search applications, such as the one Viktoria mentions, Exalead?
Viktoria: very impressed by Exalead. Wow! But, to return to the title of the thread, it is not in my IMHO the incredibly simple, all-purpose add-on that the Quick Seach Box of GDS is.

And if you could choose just TWO....?

I would choose the 1-Click Answers add-on to the Answers.com service. It combines the two essential ingredients: a) extreme ease of use (just hold down the Alt key and click on the word (or words) in ANY online or offline application); b) extraordinarily rich resource.
OK, shoot me down in flames!

Directory Opus Nov 13, 2006

For me that's the killer app since I was always looking for a better option than Windows Explorer.

This tools allow many browsing options to navigate through your computer, it includes an FTP client and integrates google desktop search.

You can also define your favorite folders which is excellent if you do a lot of project management as you can easily access your most common folders.
