try this Sep 7, 2006

julie,

i find this site to be pretty useful:

http://europa.eu.int/eurodicautom/Controller

it will not always return a good answer to your query, but when it does it always gives you a reference, and you can be pretty sure of the answer given.

hint: try and narrow your search as it will give you more pertinent answers

good luck!<

Which languages? - Some tips & tricks Sep 7, 2006

I suppose EN-ES and FR, as you often need to find out what certain concepts in the source mean before you can translate them.

If you translate out of EN you cannot do without: Black's Law Dictionary and preferably a few books on EN and AM legal systems. Preferably a book on comparative law (common law vs civil law) in French

A few (general) useful sites, although it really depends on what you are translating:

A few (general) useful sites, although it really depends on what you are translating:

World legal institute
http://www.worldlii.org/

The world law guide
http://www.lexadin.nl/wlg/

European judicial networdk in civil and commercial matters
http://ec.europa.eu/civiljustice/
(all EU languages)

If you are translating user agreements (TOU or EULA) it often helps to check on existing translations of e.g. Microsoft or SUN EULAs as there are many 'standard' paragraphs in them.

The same goes for General Conditions and specific contracts - it just takes ( a lot of) time to get familiar with them.

Legal translation is 'heavy' on resources and knowledge - I studied law, I now have about 20 books, legislative texts and dictionaries just to translate legal texts between Dutch and English and I am still missing a few books!
