Software is the best, but a paper backup makes sense too Jan 9, 2006

I've found that even after installing some dictionaries on the hard disk, the software periodically requires re-activation either by inserting the original CD or by connecting to the Internet. This can get real annoying pretty soon, especially if you are away from your CD set or the Internet. In my experience, this occurs frequently and what's worse, randomly.

Having said that, the cost of maintaining both versions can be prohibitive, and the enormous benefits of using the software version with the concomitant effects on productivity increase essentially mean that I purchase most dictionaries in the electronic form alone.

Can you recommend a brand? Jan 13, 2006

Well, on the whole, it's convenient to have terminology just a click away somewhere on the computer. However, if my favourite online dictionary or software dictionary is, for some reason, not working, then I would be out of business if I did not also have plenty of good paper dictionaries to consult. I suppose the ideal is to have both versions. However, if translating is your full-time job, just make sure you don't get into a position one day where you can't translate, just because you don't have paper dictionary back-ups. It has happened to me in the past.

Hi Astrid, thanks for your feedback. Since you were one of the only English-German folks to reply, do you have any direct recommendations for me? I am looking for a general dictionary as well as financial and technical.

THanks so much!

...well, then, ... er...

a) you boot your computer
b) you reinsert the CDROM
c) you take a day off
d) you buy another "on-line dictionary"
e) ... and you sell the old one on Ebay / ProZ
