Third-party liability insurance Feb 20, 2008

Astrid, this type of insurance (allgemeine Haftpflichtversicherung) is very adivsable. As far as I know it is even mandatory in Germany - for anyone, not just translators. I can be mistaken, though. What I do know that this is not expensive at all.
It takes care of cases such as a neighbour breaking his/her leg on you teeny-tiny little part of the pedestrian's sidewalk which happened to be covered with snow on top of ice and which you neglected to clean before 7:30 in the morning (or some other terribly early time) as required by law. Wa-hell.

As to general professional insurance: I do not have professional insurance - I wanted to have it but then read the legalese minutes which explicitly excluded errors arising from inverted numbers, incorrect decimal separators, etc. So what would that do any good?
To be on the safe side and also because I simply suck at it (and have no fun at all) I generally decline legal translations. For medical translations I consult a friend who is a linguist and a medical doctor, and when I have doubts, I make sure the clients receives a list of questions. If that does not work I add a short comment when sending the return package. I generally tend to be quite careful, because in the end - when working with direct clients - you are definitely liable for how/what you translate.
