I have a client who has requested that I translate the word "welcome" (as in you're welcome here, not thank you, you're welcome) into as many languages as possible. My friend actually found the following link: http://www.omniglot.com/language/phrases/welcome.htm

On this site, it lists the word in many different languages, but you know how translation websites can go--a bit more than haphazard. So, I'm trying to "check the site's references," if such a thing is possible. Anybody ever heard of them? Id your language correct on there? Does the site have a good reputation or a bad one?

Thank you in advance.

Correct also for French and Indonesian.
And thanks for pointing out the site... Where else could I have learnt how to say "my hovercraft is full of eels" in so many languages!

Russian -- okay, Latvian -- not so much :) Sep 19, 2006

The phrase in Russian is correct, but the Latvian phrase should be "Laipni lūdzam" ('li-pnee 'loo-dzahm). The one they have posted there has incorrect meaning.

And thanks for the site

thanks Sep 19, 2006

Yeah, I knew the French and the Spanish were on, but I thought the Swahili was a little off. These words are getting painted on the side of museum, so I wanted to make sure it was exactly right.

Thank you everyone, very much.

Hi Terena,

The Mandarin Chinese is correct and the characters are the same for the other forms so presumably they're correct.

The website is a wealth of information.:) I'm so grateful for their "useful phrases" section because many a time I've been traveling in Germany and wanted to tell people:
"I am not a conference delegate, nevertheless I would like a penguin."

Best wishes,
Mark

Italian... only 50% right Sep 20, 2006

Hi
actually the Italian terms on the site refer only to men (1 or more). If I were to address to 1 or more women I would say:
"benvenuta"
or
"benvenute"

being a woman I would care!
I hope it's clear.
I feel it's the same for the spanish translation, but you'd better check it with a native speaker.
bye

Czech is correct, but... Sep 20, 2006

only partly: Vítáme Vás is only one of several possible forms, according to context.

Vítáme : we welcome

Vás : "you" meaning several people or "You" politely (German "Sie")

Vítám Vás : I welcome you

When only one person is addressed informally it would be Vítáme (resp. Vítám) tě.

Thanks for the link, there are some very interesting (and funny!) things to explore...

ஞாபகமாக
In spanish doesn´t work so easy Sep 20, 2006

We use:
Bienvenido in singular and Bienvenidos in plural. Although Bienvenido, listed in ther refered websute es correct in your case you should use Bienvenidos (if you expect more than one person).
Lucky us translation is quite more complex than taking a dictionary (no matter how powerful it could be) and write down. Otherwise we would be replaced by machines.
