I came across this application recently.

http://www.copernic.com/index.html

It is a search engine for files stored on your computer. It looks very capable.

Is it as good as it sounds?
Are there any known "issues"?

TIA for any opinions,
Pawel Skalinski

Not much use to me Sep 6, 2004

I installed it thinking it might be useful as an email index. But it assumes you must be using Outlook or Outloook Express. Though I have Outlook Express, I hardly ever use it; the mail server I use is Thunderbird. There is no provision for indexing emails in this email client as far as I can make out. So I have now uninstalled it.

Fast, but a memory hog Sep 6, 2004

I don't use Outlook, so the e-mail bit is not applicable. However, it is lightning fast for finding text anywhere on your hard disk - almost instantaneous in most cases. It identifies the files where the search word/phrase appears, and gives you a preview of the context. Ideal for 'I know I've translated this before', or for finding reference material.
However, when it is indexing I find it hogs memory and really slows everything down. Fortunately, you can turn indexing off, and everyhting

However, when it is indexing I find it hogs memory and really slows everything down. Fortunately, you can turn indexing off, and everyhting returns to normal. However, this should be automatic (there are several settings for this) but it isn't.
OTOH, it is free, and excellent at its main job.

Are they others programs doing that ? I mean, just looking in you file where you have already translated this before and give the contexte ? I am looking for something like that.

Well, yes, there are. There is one called "Inforapid search and replace".

You can find it here:

http://www.inforapid.de/html/english.htm

It finds only text, so it is not as universal as copernic.
I'm always on the lookout for something with more flashing lights, though!

Copernic update Sep 23, 2004

I have installed and used this software for the past two weeks or so.

I think it does a fine job in the "I know I've translated this before" category.
The initial indexing of the files may take a loooong time (depending on how much trash er... archive material) you have on your drive.
It is best to let the program index the files while you go out for a walk.
Afterwards, updating the index takes a few seconds each time.
The find function works very well.

There is no point (IMO) in having the program start automatically and make updates automatically. This tends to slow the computer down a bit.
Just make an update once in a while - as often as you feel necessary.

A nice tool, I think.

PDF files? Sep 23, 2004

If I have PDF glossaries saved on my computer, will it search them as well? I've currently got PowerGrep installed, but it seems to jam up on me.

It searches all files it considers "text" - DOC, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, RTF, HTML and TXT, but you can tell it to index any file extensions you like.

It also indexes pictures (giving you a thumbnail view of each) and music files with an option to play the file.

In the program window you have a "contexted" view of the term you are looking for - if you are looking for a particular word, the file view window lets you see where that word occurs in the document(s).
