Macs Jan 23, 2012

THe great thing about Macs is that so long as you do some very simple periodic maintenance, nothing goes wrong with them, so you save an enormous amount of time and money by not needing to have a "computer guy" who comes over and "fixes your computer".

The cost of that alone, and the downtime, more than compensates for the higher cost of buying a Mac.

Improved functionality Jan 23, 2012

Hi Tom, what problems have you had with the Mac Lion OS? I have had no issues whatsoever with it and like some of its features such as the multiple desktops and the iCloud.

Also, recent upgrades to the OS on my iPhone have improved its functionality.

Happy user of Macbook Pro/Trados 2011/Parallels Jan 24, 2012

Neil,

I work on a Macbook Pro (mid 2009) with Trados and Parallels, and I am very happy with the setup. However, I would recommend that you get the newest versions of Parallels and Trados and install Windows 7 instead of XP (in 64 bit mode) – I used to have problems before, when I used older software versions. The upgrade to Windows 7 made a big difference.

You also need to ensure that you have plenty of RAM - 4GB of RAM is sufficient to run this setup, but it works much better with 8GB ram.

You will notice that the processor speed often goes up when you work in the virtual environment, so I would recommend installing fan control software to keep the computer cool. Also, the battery drains more quickly when you work in the virtual environment - because of this, I think, the first battery on my Macbook got worn out and had to be replaced after less than 2 years.

My reasons for choosing a mac had nothing to do with the Mac operating environment – I chose it because of the high quality hardware, including the fantastic screen and comfortable keyboard.

Johanna

LAPTOPS Jan 25, 2012

Hi Johanna,

I am also a happy user of the iMac, Trados and Parallels! My Parallels automatically came with Windows 7 (which I am pleased about as I never liked XP or Vista!)

I am now thinking about also buying a Mac Pro laptop. (My current laptop is a Toshiba with Windows 7 OS).

I totally agree with you about the screen and keyboard. Also thanks for the tip on the fan control software. I don't have this issue with the iMac (in fact, it is the quietest comp

Yes I meant Trados. Jan 28, 2012

I am not a computer savi, but one of my cousins is an electronic Engineer, he was once installing a virtual PC to include Trados in my MAC system, but it was me that stop him because I was afraid.

In terms on differences between systems, is like comparing a VW with a BMW. In my personal opinion and experience of about 10 years using MAC, is even cheaper to use a MAC than keeping a PC up to date with all the anti's, paid updates, and patches. Yes, it may seem that you pay more for your MAC when you buy, but it's all you will spend.

I have been trying to get off my PC and will definitely try the virtual machine, if I like it I will not think twice.

Thank you all for your comments, they are very helpful.

An update with the new MacBook Air Feb 6, 2014

Dear Mac users,
considering a new MacBook Air has been put on the market, what do you thnk about using it as main machine?

I connect it to a 27" monitor for the daily use, while I bring it as is when I'm on the go.

Mainly I use Wordfast, but I need also Parallel when clients ask me to provide trados files (you need to pretranslate them before working them in WF).

Is any of you using it?

Thanks
Lucia

Macbook air Feb 6, 2014

Hi, MY brother bought one and he works in IT. Many of his colleagues also bought one. He says they break really easily.
Also I believe they have a low capacity compared with the Mac Pro so they cannot really be used for Translation Programs. However, things might have changed since I looked into the same subject! I would suggest an iMac unless you really need to be portable. They only weight 4 kilos and have higher capacity and are very fast. I've had mine now for about 4 years and nothin

I would suggest an iMac unless you really need to be portable. They only weight 4 kilos and have higher capacity and are very fast. I've had mine now for about 4 years and nothing has gone wrong with it except the trackpad I bought has just started to go! I thoroughly recommend them, including with Parallels and Windows. Also mine is quite portable, I have taken it twice now in a suitcase between London and Barcelona.

I'd prefer a portable one... Feb 6, 2014

I've been using a notebook for years connected to a large monitor and this changed my life.

Now that I want to pass to a Mac I would continue with a notebook.
Now the point is: MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro from a performance point of view?

Thanks
Lucia

Work capacity Feb 6, 2014

I have no personal experience with the Pro or the Macbook Air but I hear the Pro is faster and has higher capacity so is more suitable for Trados and other TM programs.

Not necessarily true. Do the whole calculation, including the time and money you waste on your "computer technician", fighting viruses, etc.

Buying a Mac Pro would be crazy. The Mac Pro is for really high-end film editing etc. Using a MacPro for translating would be like buying a Porsche for your weekly trip to the supermarket.

What you really need is an ordinary MacBook Pro or similar, with as much RAM as you can afford. The trick of getting best performance out of a Mac is to install as much RAM as possible.
