I have found these courses (http://www.city.ac.uk/translation/courses/cpd/) in the City University London and I would like to ask if anyone has attended any of them or has any knowledge about them.

These are the only individual courses that I have found in London and I would like to attend to keep in shape. They seem a bit expensive (4 days 480£) and I would like to get some feedback about their profitability.

I will welcome any other general comment about the experience of visiting these kind of courses. (E.g., did it improve your client base, networking, expertise).

Thank you,

Luis

Why not try a subject-related course instead? Nov 19, 2010

I can't comment on the translation courses at City Uni, but I would suggest expanding your search to include evening classes in the subjects you translate (or would like to translate). They are an excellent way to deepen your understanding of the concepts and terminology in English for any subject.

The City Lit has a huge range of courses for adults:

There are plenty of other places around London that offer evening classes. You can do a search on this site to find something close to you:

Very worthwhile experience Nov 22, 2010

I attended all eight of the legal translation modules given in 2008-2010 and found the experience very worthwhile.

Unless you are particularly interested in translation theory, I would suggest you choose the modules that you think would be most useful for your own client base. If you don’t already have a grounding in law, your best bet would probably be the company and commercial modules and/or the financial module.

Unless you are particularly interested in translation theory, I would suggest you choose the modules that you think would be most useful for your own client base. If you don’t already have a grounding in law, your best bet would probably be the company and commercial modules and/or the financial module.

You mention that you find the course a bit expensive. I don’t know whether you noticed on their website, but if you click on “What else might I be interested in?” under each module you will see that they have several courses of 1, 2 or 3 days, so you don't have to take the full module each time. Having said that, I think you’ll find that compared with other universities offering comparable level courses, £480 for four full days including materials is quite reasonable.

One thing I really appreciated was the calibre of the students and the opportunity for networking with colleagues in different countries after the courses ended. The student base during the time I was there was drawn primarily from the UK, France, Spain and Germany, with a few students from other countries (mainly Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria, but I think now there are quite a few Eastern European students too). The classes are not very big so you can get to know people pretty well in four days. I continue to exchange work and help with a few of the colleagues I met during the course.

So, yes, I found it a very rewarding experience overall. Good luck with “keeping in shape” Luis. It isn’t always easy for us freelancers to keep up our skills.
