payment and recognition | Mar 18, 2019 |
I am more happy to accept lower rates from people/agencies I enjoy working with, which is usually because of the recognition and the friendly/personal communication.
A cluster of motivations | Mar 18, 2019 |
1. Recognition from client, which 2. is reflected in adequate payment and 3. in a generally respectful tone of conversation (it doesn't have to be chatty, one of my favourite clients is a minimalist with words, but the right words). 4. Texts that are pleasant in form and content. 5. Knowing that my translations will be presented on/in a well-made website or file that will be enjoyable to read. Forgot anything?

Spreading happiness and goodness around the world | Mar 18, 2019 |
This is my second motivation. My first one is money. I've got this 80-cm long wooden beauty I started 7 years ago, which I'd like to finish before I am blind and arthritic. I see her and her bare masts every day in my office, and I need less than 200 hours to install riggings, deadeyes, ratlines, blocks and sails. But professional work is always in the way to pay my monthly bills. Philippe
Why can't I choose all options?

I think what drives me the most is the challenge of solving challenging and fascinating linguistic problems. The money is nice, but I could have chosen a different career when I was younger if I hadn't had such a compulsion to play with language.

Being able to be a digital nomad
Being independet, having fun working with languages and loving my job very, very much is why I'm motivated. No matter how many negative experiences I had regarding clients or money, I clung to my job because I really enjoy it.

It's a combination of payment, recognition, and, above all, loving what I'm doing.

Of course, being paid is... essential. We all have bills to pay! But developing good relationships with clients, agencies and peers is, in my opinion, more important, even if that could mean lower rates. After all, good relationships mean more contracts. Another reason would be the satisfaction and pride of a job well done.
Seeing My Name In Print As The Translator | Mar 18, 2019 |
Other than the pure pleasure and joy that I experience as I carry out my work as a literary translator, I enjoy seeing my name in print on my books' title pages, and most recently, on the cover, too.
