Me he despedido de los amigos que más quiero para emprender un corto pero dramático viaje. Sobre un espejo de plata encuentro, mucho antes de que amanezca, el maletín con la ropa que debo usar en la extraña tierra a que me dirijo.
El perfume tenso y frío de la madrugada bate misteriosamente el inmenso acantilado de la noche.
En la página tersa del cielo temblaba la inicial de una nube, y debajo de mi balcón un ruiseñor y una rana levantan en el aire un aspa soñolienta de sonido.
Yo, tranquilo pero melancólico, hago los últimos preparativos, embargado por sutilísimas emociones de alas y círculos concéntricos. Sobre la blanca pared del cuarto, yerta y rígida como una serpiente de museo, cuelga la espada gloriosa que llevó mi abuelo en la guerra contra el rey don Carlos de Borbón.
Piadosamente descuelgo esa espada, vestida de herrumbre amarillenta como un álamo blanco, y me la ciño recordando que tengo que sostener una gran lucha invisible antes de entrar en el jardín. Lucha extática y violentísima con mi enemigo secular, el gigantesco dragón del Sentido Común.
Una emoción aguda y elegíaca por las cosas que no han sido, buenas y malas, grandes y pequeñas, invade los paisajes de mis ojos casi ocultos por unas gafas de luz violeta. Una emoción amarga que me hace caminar hacia este jardín que se estremece en las altísimas llanuras del aire.
Los ojos de todas las criaturas golpean como puntos fosfóricos sobre la pared del porvenir… lo de atrás se queda lleno de maleza amarilla, huertos sin frutos y ríos sin agua. Jamás, ningún hombre cayó de espaldas sobre la muerte. Pero yo, por un momento, contemplando ese paisaje abandonado e infinito, he visto planos de vida inédita, múltiples y superpuestos como los cangilones de una noria sin fin.
Antes de marchar siento un dolor agudo en el corazón. Mi familia duerme y toda la casa está en un reposo absoluto. El alba, revelando torres y contando una a una las hojas de los árboles, me pone un crujiente vestido de encaje lumínico.
Algo se me olvida… no me cabe la menor duda… ¡tanto tiempo preparándome! y… Señor, ¿qué se me olvida? ¡Ah! Un pedazo de madera… uno bueno de cerezo sonrosado y compacto.
Creo que hay que ir bien presentado… De una jarra con flores puesta sobre mi mesilla me prendo en el ojal siniestro una gran rosa pálida que tiene un rostro enfurecido pero hierático.
Ya es la hora.

I have said my goodbyes to the friends I love most to go on a short but meaningful journey.
On a mirror of silver, long before dawn has broken, I find my suitcase with all the clothes I am going to need in this strange land to which I’m heading. Early morning’s tense, icy wave of perfume crashes mysteriously against the cliffs of the night.
On the smooth page of the sky quiver the wisps of a new cloud, and underneath my balcony a nightingale and a frog hoist a sleepy sail of sound into the air.
Calm but melancholic, I take care of the final preparations, overcome with faint, fluttering emotions and concentric circles. On the white wall of the room, stiff and rigid like a snake in a museum, hangs the glorious sword that my grandfather wore in battle against Carlos, Duke of Madrid. Devoutly, I take down the sword, speckled with yellowy rust like a silver poplar, and I brandish it, remembering that I have to endure a great, invisible battle before entering the garden. A battle of such violence and ecstasy against my worldly enemy… the colossal dragon of Common Sense.
A sharp, painful emotion for the things that have not been— good or bad, big or small— invades the landscapes of my eyes, which are almost hidden by glasses of purple light. A bitter emotion that pushes me to walk towards this garden, which trembles in the atmosphere’s highest plains.
The eyes of every creature shower the wall of the future like phosphoric bullets… the past grows full of yellowy weeds, fruitless orchards and waterless rivers.
Never has one man ever fallen backwards on top of death. But, for one moment, in contemplating this abandoned and infinite landscape, I see life’s maps, many of them… unpublished and superimposed like the buckets of a never-ending waterwheel.
Before I leave I feel a sharp pain in my heart. My family sleeps and the house is in absolute repose. The dawn, revealing towers and counting one-by-one the leaves of the trees, fits me in a crisp suit, of fine lace detail.
I’m forgetting something… I’m absolutely sure of it… So much time spent preparing and… God, what am I forgetting? Ah! A piece of wood… A good piece, a small piece from a rosy cherry tree.
I believe in going well turned-out… From a vase of flowers sitting on my bedside table I pin in my left buttonhole a large pale rose with a furious, sacerdotal face.
Now it is time.

Texte source - français Entré au parlement grec à l'occasion des législatives du 6 mai, le groupe d'extrême droite a deux crédos: la dénonciation du programme de rigueur imposé par les bailleurs de fonds et l'arrêt du flux de migrants. Reportage.
Accroché sous les fenêtres du siège du parti, dans le centre d'Athènes, le logo du mouvement Xriss Avghi (L'Aube dorée) est reconnaissable de loin. En grosses lettres blanches sur fond rouge, le slogan "La Grèce appartient aux Grecs" est encadré de formes qui évoquent la svastika hitlérienne. Quasiment inconnu il y a deux ans, le groupe rejette l'appellation "néo-nazie" que lui attribuent les autres partis grecs. Forts de 7% des voix après les élections législatives de dimanche, une vingtaine de ses députés vont entrer au Parlement - une première pour un parti ultranationaliste depuis la chute du régime des colonels, en 1974.
Dans un des quartiers les plus défavorisés d'Athènes, les bureaux de L'Aube dorée sont nichés dans les étages d'un immeuble banal, situé à deux pas d'un commissariat de police. Depuis quelques semaines, les couloirs sont pleins de curieux venus s'informer et d'anonymes désespérés par la crise économique, à la recherche de conseils. Les visiteurs croisent les militants, qui semblent tous porter le même uniforme, où le noir domine: chemise noire, pantalon noir, blouson de cuir et crâne rasé...
Les femmes sont nombreuses, elles aussi. Agée d'une quarantaine d'années, soignée et terriblement efficace, Thémis Skordeli est candidate et égérie du parti, bien qu'elle n'en soit pas membre. "Avant, explique-t-elle, je votais pour la Nouvelle Démocratie [principal parti de droite]. Mais quand je demandais de l'aide à la police, au parti, au ministère ou à la mairie, personne ne répondait. Seule L'Aube dorée nous a aidés. C'est normal que je les rejoigne pour ces élections."
Des livres à la gloire du troisième Reich
Thémis est en guerre contre la ghettoïsation de son quartier d'Aghios Panteleimonas. Les poubelles jonchent les trottoirs et de nombreux Grecs ont fui les lieux, provoquant un afflux d'immigrés. Puisque l'Etat et ses représentants semblent avoir déserté les rues, Thémis a fait sien le leitmotiv de L'Aube dorée: "Il faut décrasser le pays!"
Dans ce même local, il y a quelques mois, des livres à la gloire du troisième Reich et mettant en cause la Shoah étaient proposés à la vente. Dans les semaines qui ont précédé le scrutin de dimanche, les leaders du mouvement ont fait place nette: il ne reste que deux ouvrages sur le sujet. En revanche, des briquets et des tee-shirts frappés du logo couvrent un stand. "Nous n'avons aucun soutien financier, se plaint Gergios Germenis, boulanger de son état, responsable de la communication au sein du parti et candidat dans la seconde circonscription d'Athènes. Nos seules ressources sont les dons de nos membres. Pour nous, ils est inespéré de voir L'Aube dorée entrer au Parlement, alors qu'il y a quelques années, on ne pouvait même pas hisser notre drapeau!"
Des mines antipersonnelles contre les migrants
Le programme du mouvement peut se résumer, pour l'essentiel, à deux points: dénonciation du programme de rigueur économique imposé par les bailleurs de fonds internationaux; minage des frontières gréco-turques pour arrêter le flux des immigrés. Le message est bien accueilli par les habitants des quartiers les plus misérables de la capitale. Mais pas seulement. "Au Pirée (quartier en partie épargné par l'immigration), L'Aube dorée a dépassé dans les urnes le score de tous les autre partis, s'exclame Yiannis Pretenderis, éditorialiste. C'est incroyable! Il n'y a pas un seul bureau de vote dans le pays où ils n'ont pas attiré au moins une voix."
Thémis jubile: "Nous avons travaillé auprès des gens, explique-t-elle. Nos gars ont accompagné les personnes âgées à la banque et au marché, on a nettoyé les quartiers et on a rendu les places publiques aux Athéniens. Ils ont exprimé leur reconnaissance dans les urnes." Dans un quartier central d'Athènes, un chômeur confirme: "Les militants de L'Aube dorée m'ont donné des vêtements et même un peu d'argent de poche. Ils viennent voir comment on va et s'inquiètent de notre sort. Ils accompagnent même les femmes qui ont peur de rentrer chez elles le soir".
Ce travail de terrain dans les quartiers défavorisés, aux façades défigurées par les tags, ajouté à la volonté largement partagée de punir l'ensemble du monde politique grec, explique le succès du mouvement. Durera-t-il? Dimanche, des militants de L'Aube dorée ont attaqué six bureaux de vote. Et deux des futurs parlementaires du mouvement doivent comparaître à la fin du mois de mai pour coups et blessures. Contre des migrants.

Hung from the windows of the head office in the centre of Athens, the logo of the Chrysi Avgi— ‘Golden Dawn’— movement is recognisable from afar. In large white letters on a red background, shapes evoking the swastika frame the slogan “Greece belongs to the Greeks”. The group, who were virtually unheard of two years ago, rejects the “neo-Nazi” tag that the other Greek political parties have attached to them. Boasting 7% of the vote after Sunday’s legislative election, around twenty of its deputies are going to be entered into Parliament— a first for an ultra-nationalist party since the fall of the military junta in 1974.
In one of Athens’ most deprived neighbourhoods, Golden Dawn’s offices are tucked away in the floors of an unremarkable building, just a stone’s throw away from a police station. For weeks the corridors have been full of both curious visitors coming to find out more, and of anonyms, devastated by the economic crisis, coming to seek advice. They pass the militants who all seem to be wearing the same uniform, which is almost entirely black: black shirt, black trousers, leather jacket and a shaved head.
There are numerous women present, too. Themis Skordeli, forty-something, well groomed and frightfully efficient, is a candidate and all-round advocate for the party, even though she wasn’t elected. “In the past,” she says, “I voted New Democracy (the main right-wing party). But if I ever asked for help from the police, the party, the ministry or the council, no one responded. Only Golden Dawn has helped us. It goes without saying that I will join them in the elections.”
Books honouring the glory of Nazi Germany.
Themis is at war with the ghettoization of her neighbourhood, Aghios Panteleimonas. Bin contents litter the pavements and many Greeks have abandoned the area, provoking an immigrant influx. While the State and its representatives appear to have deserted the streets, Themis has herself adopted the leitmotiv “It’s time to clean up our country!”
In this same neighbourhood several months ago, books honouring the glory of Nazi Germany and the mission of the Holocaust were put on sale. In the weeks leading up to Sunday’s ballot, the movement’s leaders made a clean sweep: there are only two of the books in question remaining. On the other hand, lighters and t-shirts displaying the logo remain on the stands. “We have zero financial support,” says Gergios Germenis, a baker by trader, head of communications at the centre of the party and candidate for the second district of Athens. “Our only resources are the donations from our members. For us, it was a shock to see Golden Dawn gain entry into Parliament, when a few years ago you couldn’t even hoist our flag!”
Anti-personnel mines against migrants.
The movement’s agenda can essentially be summed up in two points: the denunciation of the economic austerity programme imposed by international lenders, and the mining of the Greco-Turkish borders to stop the influx of immigrants. The message is well received by the inhabitants of the most destitute areas of the capital. But it’s not only them. “In Piraeus (an area partly spared from immigration), Golden Dawn has exceeded the score of all other parties in the ballot,” says columnist Yiannis Pretenderis. “It’s incredible! There isn’t a single polling station in the country where they haven’t obtained at least one vote.”
Themis is jubilant: “We’ve worked closely with the people,” she says, “Our boys have accompanied old people to the bank and to the market; we’ve cleaned up the streets and given public places back to Athenians. They have expressed their gratitude at the polls.” In a central neighbourhood of Athens, one unemployed man says: “The militants of the Golden Dawn gave me clothes and even put a bit of money in my pocket. They come to see how we’re doing and worry about our sort. They even walk home women who are afraid at night-time.”
This groundwork in the deprived neighbourhoods and on the walls disfigured by graffiti, not to mention the shared will to collectively punish those from the Greek world of politics, explains the success of the movement. Will it last? On Sunday, Golden Dawn militants attacked six polling stations. And two of the movement’s future members of Parliament will appear in court at the end of May on charges relating to violent assault… of immigrants.
