Le laboratoire que dirige Richard Béliveau ne s’attache pas qu’à l’angiogenèse, il cible de nombreux thèmes liés au cancer.
Ainsi, l’un des aspects des recherches porte sur les mécanismes de résistance des cellules cancéreuses à la chimiothérapie.
L’oncologue explique : « Nous mettons nos énergies à étudier une catégorie d’enzymes transporteuses de médicaments de chimiothérapie vers les cellules. Nous savons maintenant que, dans de nombreux cas, les médicaments antitumeurs, une fois rendus à leur but, sont incapables de pénétrer les cellules tumorales pour les tuer. On dit alors que les cellules cancéreuses sont résistantes à la chimiothérapie ».
Un autre projet du laboratoire d’oncologie porte sur la façon dont les tissus normaux ou cancéreux répondent à des conditions de carence en oxygène (ischémie-hypoxie).
Ces conditions d’ischémie-hypoxie se retrouvent non-seulement dans les cancers, mais aussi dans le développement des plaques athéromateuses (maladies cardiaques) et d’embolies (maladies cérébrovasculaires).
Ce manque d’oxygène génère une blessure ischémique qui provoque le phénomène d’angiogenèse, donc la prolifération des vaisseaux sanguins. C’est un appel au secours face au danger d’hypoxie. L’instinct de survie moléculaire!
De nombreuses études suggèrent que l’induction de l’angiogenèse serait cruciale dans le développement des métastases.
En l’absence de vascularisation, les tumeurs demeurent dans un état latent et bénin et ne parviennent pas à former des métastases.
L’induction de la néovascularisation par des facteurs d’origine tumorale conduit à la formation d’un réseau de vaisseaux sanguins importants qui permet la croissance des cellules tumorales, non seulement par l’apport de composés énergétiques, mais également par la sécrétion de divers facteurs de croissance (effet paracrine).
La tumeur peut par la suite prendre de l’expansion et coloniser d’autre tissus.

Richard Béliveau, at head of UQAM’s Molecular Oncology Laboratory, does not lead only angiogenesis projects. He and his team also focus on many cancer-related topics. For example, cancer cells ‘resistance mechanisms to chemotherapy is one of the research-oriented areas of interest.
The oncologist explains that they are putting their energies into studying a class of transferring enzymes that carry chemotherapy drugs to cells.
Nowadays, members of the laboratory are aware of cancer cells ‘resistance to chemotherapy. This phenomenon occurs, in many cases, when an anti-tumour drug reaches the tumour cells yet is unable to penetrate them and kill them.
Another project at the oncology lab concerns how normal or cancerous tissues respond to oxygen deprivation conditions (ischemia-hypoxia). These conditions are present in cancers as well as in the development of atheromatous plaques (heart diseases) and embolisms (cerebrovascular diseases).
Lack of oxygen generates an ischemic injury that causes the angiogenic phenomenon, hence the proliferation of blood vessels. Hypoxia is a real danger that should trigger the survival instinct at the molecular level.
Many studies suggest that angiogenesis induction is crucial in metastasis development. Without vascularization, a tumour remains in a benign and dormant state and fails to metastasize. Induction of neovascularization by tumour-derived factors leads to the formation of a major network of vessels, which allows tumour cells to grow through the addition of energetic compounds and the secretion of various growth factors (paracrine effect). The tumour can then expand and colonize other tissues.
