Italian term

abbigliaggio

Italian to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
Hi,
I am having an hard time finding an elegant alternative to "packaging". Any ideas?
"..abbiamo cercato di migliorare l'abbigliaggio del vino....", it is an informal letter.
Thanks in advance to all of you,
Milena

Discussion

Milena Bosco (X) (asker) Jul 11, 2008:
I will go for Giles' suggestion. I think that "presentation" added to packaging makes it more product oriented and less commercial. This company is trying to improve the looks of the product for the US market, and I think that keeping packaging (as suggested by dianalang :) ) is a good idea.
Moranna and texjax DDS PhD: thank you for the time you spent on this one. I wouldn't go for "wrapping" because it gives more the idea of covering material,of "boxing" while in this case the client is also referring to elements in and on the bottle. I wouldn't go for "finished bottles" because the client is also referring to "wrapping".
In the end I think that Giles found the perfect way in the middle. Thank you all, again, and have a great day.

Thank you.

I strongly believe that "packaging" is the best term to use here. I specialize in latin languages, but I've been living in UK for years and I've just asked my partner, who is a native English speaker. Much better than wrapping or boxing. I hope this helps

presentation packaging

The term refers to relatively elaborate packaging designed to attract the consumer's attention. It is not restricted to wine.

agree TrishCivitella : Definitely packaging, with or without the presentation before it.

Hi Trish. The context should make it clear whether "presentation" is necessary. Italian winemakers often use terms like "veste" or "abbigliaggio" to distinguish elaborate labelling or packaging from standard formats.

wrapping

thanks Lise, see my comment below
agree dianalang1 : I think they are talking about shipping the wine bottles (as a business, not as presents)

Hi Diana, my understanding is that they are talking about the bottle features, i.e. label, cork and so on, all that concern the external "appearance". I agree, not as a gift
