Italian term

alevita

Italian to English Other Government / Politics ethnic groups
Per paura di perdere la propria identità nazionale, che si confondeva peraltro con l'islam, la Turchia ha negato anche l'esistenza della sua comunità ___alevita___.

I have looked up the usual internet resources but can find no translation for alevita. There are Turkish minorities called Laz and Levantine but I don't think this is it. Any assistance VERY GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED!!!!

Alevi community

Hi Ryan. I happen to do numerous translations on ehtnic/religious minorities and I'm pretty sure this is the name of this community.
Alevis are followers of Ali, a son-in-law of Mohammed, and they are named after him. This religion is especially widespread in the South-Eastern part of Turkey and it is practised by different ethnic groups.

The history of that part of the world and its complex ethnic and religious composition are well worth some further research:

grazie, silviantonia:)
neutral irenef : I don't like disagreeing with colleagues, Rachel, but this term is just not used... TBHWY: Yes, it is "to be honest with you". I don't like this type of acronyms much, but they do come in useful at times

It's OK irenef - I answered without much time for searching, just to indicate there was something along these lines as a minority thing\\What's TBHWY - to be honest with you-?

alevit

è una dottrina. Vai su google, c'è tantissimo materiale
Peer comment(s):

neutral irenef : Esatto, eride, ma mentre "Alevite" esiste come parola - anche se poco usata - "Alevit" non si incontra nei testi, neanche su Google - a parte qualche sito non madrelingua. Non è una critica, solo una precisazione.
