Can someone tell me what this term ("triliun") means in news media contexts. I have never been sure, and dictionary searches are inclusive (anything from "trillion" to "quintillion" -- from 10 to the power of 10 to 10 to the power of 30!).

American and British English have different names for this number (10^12). American English uses \'Trillion\' while British English uses the word \'Billion\'. Bahasa Indonesia is somehow free from this bias. here are the details :
10^6 = juta
10^9 = milliar
10^12 = trilliun

: BE used to us steps of 6 zeros, million = 6, billion = 12, trillion = 18. I think this was found excessive in America, some hundred years ago, leading to the switch to billion = 9 and trillion = 12. BE has now mostly switched, to decrease confusion.
