French term
pied de cordon
French to English
Tech/Engineering
Metallurgy / Casting
Welding
In a table comparing types of defect and weld classes, we have "rayon de raccordement du pied de cordon pour les soudures d'angle" and "angle de raccordement du pied de cordon". The "rayon" and "angle de raccordement" are the "toe radius" and "toe angle" respectively.
Further on, we find "La réduction des contraintes de pointe est obtenue en diminuant l'effet d'entaille pour les accidents géométriques naturels des cordons, le cas le plus significatif étant celui du pied de cordon d'angle".
Many thanks.

weld toe
found in some very reliable reference material (FR-EN) a steel client sent me. These glossaries may prove useful:
http://www.bocindustrial.co.uk/technical/glossary/w.asp
http://www.pipingnews.com/welding.htm
weld toe: The junction of the weld face and the base metal.
http://www.dot.state.oh.us/preventivemaintenance/Glossary/u2...
weld toe - particularly in a filet weld, the thin end of the taper furthest from the center of the weld cross section

My reference text seems to refer to this as both "weld toe" and "bead toe" but latter seems to get hits mainly in the context of tyres again.
This text has an English abstract that talks about "TIG remelting of the weld toe", while FR part has "refusion du pied de cordon par soudage TIG".

Just noticed your notes (is there some box you have to tick to get automatic notification?) and was going to ask how to get hold of the standard you mention, but I see it costs a whacking £128!!! Nice business to be in!

Note from asker:
I've a copy of ISO 17659 (Multilingual terms for welded joints with illustrations) which gives "raccordement" for "toe". As it doesn't mention "pied" at all, I suppose they may well be synonymous. |
Thanks for the extra reference, Moira. I've come across a few references to the shotpeening.org web site but most are monolingual. This article is very useful. |
Don't know about the automatic notification. The std cost 78.30 EUR from AFNOR but it's not really worth even that. |

Comment: "I've received another standard (in English) from the client on which part of this doc. I'm translating is based. It uses "weld toe" in this case."

Note from asker:
Googling for "bead foot" + welding only produces one relevant hit (your first example). Your other example is to do with car tyres, not welding. |
