No, no baby here... I understand the meaning, but I'm going to use "virtual" with a note to the editor... I think it's the safest, given that I was given "virtual time" to do this (meaning no time at all...)

Les cavités pleurales sont virtuelles, mais jouent un rôle prépondérant dans la respiration. Elles assurent la mobilité des poumons contre les parois du thorax et transmettent à ceux-ci la dépression engendrée par la contraction du diaphragme. Cette dépression crée l'appel d'air permettant l'inspiration. Il est donc indispensable que ces cavités restent virtuelles. En effet, si ces cavités se remplissent d'air, la plèvre thoracique n'attirera plus la plèvre viscérale lors de la contraction du diaphragme. La dépression créée entraînera le remplissage des cavités pleurales plutôt que la dilatation des poumons.
