beta software is quite common when testing drivers for audiovisual products for PCs. for example - DVD decoders, TV tuner cards.
however my 2 cents are on beta software, which is a software that is not yet ready for general release, but available to testers to check for bugs.

Well, without any context at all, it's impossible to be sure; but if I heard this phrase cold, I'd immediately think of a report [= piece of journalism] recorded on Beta format tapes --- either the original, analog format, or the later digi one.
