English term

roar off

English to Spanish Art/Literary Poetry & Literature guidebook
Another walk, again in the heart of the Sierra Cabrera. From the appointed meeting place, Turre’s main square, after the usual amount of hanging around whilst people turn up, Javi roars off in his 4WD. We are ready and follow him, along with a couple of other vehicles. He takes the old road west out of the town, roars through El Cortijo Grande taking no prisoners, and continues, climbing the twisty mountain road into the Sierra Cabrera for another three kilometres. He seems oblivious to the sparse nature of the convoy behind him, despite the fact that thirty walkers had assembled in the square.

Muy interesante el enlace. No obstante, no hay que olvidar que si bien "parte velozmente", no lo hace a pie, sino en su todoterreno. Por ende, los rugidos los emite el vehículo, no la persona. Creo que "rugido " debe estar en la traducción porque roar off también aplica la generación de un sonido que, en este caso, lo emite el vehículo, no la persona.

He Roared Off Well, I almost always defer to what native Spanish speakers say is the most correct expression, of course. But here, in this very interesting article about imported luxury brands that Russians love so much, you can find an example of what I am talking about (at the same time that the guy is obviously roaring off in a car!): https://www.reuters.com/article/autoshow-russia2/russians-lo...
Jose Marino Aug 14, 2022:
I thought also in SALE PITANDO but didn't propose it as does not transmit the roaring noise of the engine...
Jose Marino Aug 14, 2022:
Very good point Barbara! How I see it is that he departs quickly in his 4x4 and it is the 4x4 making the noises (the roar). Your answer is not bad at all but might not convey th desired message. En english with on word you can mean so much and in Spanish you need so many. Remember we vote not only for what we thiink it is right but preferentially in cases like this: How we understand it. I would have translated it as " arranca rugiendo y a toda velocidad en su todoterreno". That is why I voted for Natalia as her translation is more similar to what I would have translated.

It is always up to the asker to decide. The asker knows better what suits the whole text and the client.

In any case, you should put all that in your explanation so that people don't miss your point.

Good Point But the actual subject of the verbal phrase, "roar off", is the driver himself. That is one of the reasons I decided to offer the translation that I have.
Jose Marino Aug 14, 2022:
roar off
1. Of a motor vehicle or its driver, to leave very quickly while making lots of noise from the engine. Said either of the driver or the vehicle itself.

English term (edited): roars off

arranca con un rugido

Aquí "roar" corresponde a esta a acepción del MW

: to proceed or rush with great noise or commotion
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/roar

La expresión "roars off" describe un desplazamiento rápido y ruidoso, pero en este contexto prima la idea de velocidad (puesto que Javi, el líder de la caravana, va tan rápido que muchos de los que se habían reunido para seguirle se han quedado atrás).
Como el término sale dos veces en dos líneas, propongo dos traducciones diferentes:

- "after the usual amount of hanging around whilst people turn up, Javi roars off in his 4WD."
"después de esperar un rato mientras va llegando la gente, el todoterreno de Javi arranca con un rugido"

- "roars through El Cortijo Grande taking no prisoners"
"atraviesa el Cortijo Grande a toda velocidad"
