En el diccionario de dudas de medicina Navarro de McGraw viene explicado. Allí apunta que la nomenclatura anatómica y la RAE son al respecto imprecisos, pues para ellos mandíbula y hueso maxilar son sinónimos. En fin, no me lío y te doy su explicación:
En inglés, por tanto, la palabra "maxilla" hace siempre referencia al maxilar superior, mientras que la mayoría de los médicos de habla hispana siguen distinguiendo claramente entre el maxilar inferior (o mandíbula) y el maxilar superior.
