1. EMERGENT – Pre-production and “silent period”
Language Characteristic:
Student has minimal comprehension; no or very little verbal production of English; listens without giving much response; communicates with gestures and actions.
Instructional Focus:

* Activities focus on building receptive vocabulary
2. EARLY PRODUCTION – Speech is not forced
Language Characteristic:
Student exhibits limited comprehension; uses one or two words or short phrases.
Instructional Focus:
* Lessons expand receptive vocabulary
* Activities are designed to motivate students to produce vocabulary and use structures they already understand
3. SPEECH EMERGENCE – Increased comprehension; lessons continue to expand receptive vocabulary
Language Characteristic:
Student speaks in longer phrases and complete sentences; simple sentences produced; errors in speech are noticeable.
Instructional Focus:
* Activities are designed to develop higher levels of language use

Тук EMERGENT го дават като синоним на Pre-production, но при вас мисля, че под EMERGENT следва да се разбира това, което тук наричат SPEECH EMERGENCE.
