I think that's it - postpartum uterine evacuation D&C for the component parts. I agree with Tom too that D&Cs can be in/after an abortion or a miscarriage, for heavy bleeding (postpartum or otherwise), for RPOC, etc. ... postpartum curettage/postpartum D&C (because even more specifically, I'm also seeing US Spanish "dilatación y legrado").

Thanks Tom, that makes sense. So translated literally, would be "post-partum evacuative uterine D and C? I'm just trying to understand the constituent parts of the phrase. And maybe "post-partum dilation and curettage" would be a more specific appropriate translation?

D & C Not all D & Cs are for the purpose of removing RPOCs. A D &C under certain circumstances can be utilized as an abortion procedure. The phrase "evacuador puerperal" may be being used to clarify what kind of D & C it is.

Retained products of conception (RPOC) refers to tissue that remains in your uterus (womb) after a pregnancy ends.

D&C is a minor surgical procedure to remove the contents of the uterus. Your healthcare provider dilates (opens) your cervix and uses a curette (small surgical tool) or suction to remove tissue.

From the medical coding standpoint, I think it's an issue of how much time has passed, and even the coders aren't sure where the dividing line is. I found this:

Question: If a patient came back eight weeks after she delivered for dilation and curettage for retained products of conception, should we use 59160? Or can we only use this code right after delivery (during the same episode of care)?

Answer: At eight weeks, you should report 58120 (Dilation and curettage, diagnostic and/or therapeutic [nonobstetrical]) because the cervix is closed, and the patient will need dilation.

Code 59160 (Curettage, postpartum) is more relevant after delivery and during the same episode of care while the cervix is still dilated.

Thanks. I had found D and C in my attempts but i thought that only accounted for the 'legrado' part. 'Puerperal' seems to be specifically 'post-partum', so , is 'legrado uterino evacuador' just a long winded way of saying D and C?
