SPAIN/EUROPE. This appears in a funding application. I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a more appropriate term than "management/direction" in the context of doctoral theses. Perhaps guidance or mentoring?
"El grupo de investigación posee experiencia en la dirección de Tesis Doctorales sobre producción animal, calidad de leche, ... y seguridad alimentaria."

For doctoral theses at Australian universities, for example, there is typically a supervisor and sometimes a co-supervisor.

Yes, Neil, supervision also works in the US and UK, though, in the former, the term dissertation is normally used at the doctoral level.
On a personal note, I got my PhD from Australia, and had both a supervisor and co-supervisor for my research (in Translation Studies). :-)

Neil: At least right now, I don't see any other viable options in this context. As for 'guidance,' this is what might be provided informally, but supervision is normally limited to those who've agreed to act in this capacity, as a main supervisor and co-supervisor. And then, once it's been submitted, depending on the program(me) or the university, there may be external readers.
I hope this helps. Cheers from Vietnam :-)

When I wrote (above) 'At least right now...,' I had a feeling I might be forgetting something. In his agree below, Paul's (very thoughtful) comment reminded me that at American universities, 'advising' is normally the term that's used --- a setting where candidates usually have a dissertation advisor at the doctoral level (and a thesis advisor at the master's level).
This comment however is primarily for the glossary, as the context here would appear to be Spain/Europe.

: Since this is Spain/Europe, I think "supervision" is the best option. If it were US English, I would say "doctoral advisement."

Thanks, Paul! Now that you've mentioned the US, I'd probably go with 'advising' if that were target variety. It just wasn't coming to me earlier, at least not as quickly. Years away from my home country perhaps ;)) Thanks again!

That was what mine was called at Ashland University, as I fulfilled the requirements for my Master's degree.

Actually, "advisOr"is probably preferable in this case.

Note from asker:
According to the Word spellchecker, "adviser" is UK and "advisor" USA, although I'm not sure about that. This will come in handy as a synonym anyway, so thanks for posting. |
