Does it mean simply, 'I hereby acknowledge the above terms'?

If not, what exactly does it mean? A literal translation ('for acknowledgement') doesn't work in this context.

It could possibly mean "for information", if, say, this is a copy of the contract being sent to some third party or authority for its information. Pure speculation, but possible.

I eventually opted not to translate it at all (as suggested by Nick), as it seems entirely redundant.

I agree that it does not make sense to write "zur Kenntnisnahme" before the signature.
"Zur Kenntnis genommen" would however be correct in this context.

If it simply means 'FYI' (which I was of course well aware of), then I wonder what it is doing at the end of a contract, just before the signature? It simply doesn't make sense. Why would someone write 'For your information' on a contract just before the signature?

Brigitte: this is simply a standard contract stating the terms and conditions for hotel room bookings. That's all the extra context I can provide.

or more lawyer-like "in recognition of the aforestated" would be best here, although literally it means "to the attention of....", followed by a name

Yes. It still seems redundant, though. It is an accepted convention for contracts that, by signing at the bottom, you are recognising and accepting what has gone before. The need to explicitly state as much seems to me to be redundant here.

On first glance, it seems the meaning is different here but the communicative intent may be the same. In both cases, information is prefaced with a phrase that suggests keeping the information accessible in case the recipient needs to refer back to it at a later time.
