The opposite line of thought always smelled of anti-humanistic suspicion. Reasons were not causes, and history was playing tricks on her gullible heroes in Hegel’s, Marx’s, Nietzsche’s and Freud’s narratives. The philosopher – or analyst – was expected to know more about the rest of humanity than the object of analysis him/herself. As external observers, these highly suspicious characters disregarded the Kantian autonomy of man by transcending and contradicting the latter’s self-description. Recognizing its shady past, I still would like to take up this line of thought in order to analyze the failure of formal economics to deal with the economic reality so starkly presented to us in the current crisis.
