I check on other things besides the Blue Board, and after many years of experience, my gut feeling too!

If the agency is in Europe and offers a reasonable rate, I probably accept the job. If they do not mention a rate, I tell them mine, and then if they don't run away screaming, I probably take them on. That means they know why Scandinavian languages are 'expensive', and the same almost certainly goes for German.

Outside Europe, I seriously consider bank charges. Living outside the Eurozone, I find there may be very little left for me from a fee for a small job, when the bank has taken its share. I have used Pay Pal, but I am not really happy with it, so I often say thanks, but no thanks to agencies outside Europe.

My insurance does not cover the USA, so I tell clients that, if relevant. Some drop out at the mention of fees, but others find a way to pay, and I have very rarely had trouble getting paid. Most agencies are in fact honest, so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Tłumaczenie pierwszej kwestii jest całkowicie błędne. Tłumaczenie drugiej również nie jest zgodne z oryginałem, ponieważ:

Zwyczajne hamowanie nie zostawia śladów opon na asfalcie. O poślizgu mówimy, gdy prędkość obrotowa opon nie odpowiada prędkości pojazdu, opony ślizgają się (np. pojazd jedzie bokiem), guma ściera się i skleja z nawierzchnią: [url removed] .

Słowo skid ma kilka znaczeń. IMO tutaj najlepiej pasuje:
skid vehicle = wpadać [perf wpaść] w poślizg,
[url removed]

Oryginalną kwestię najlepiej byłoby przełożyć dosłownie na: Brak śladów poślizgu na drodze.

Detektyw uważa, że samochód nie wpadł w poślizg, a raczej został uderzony przez inny pojazd: Means he was hit by someone with a metal bumper. Dochodzenie wykaże, że miał rację.

Dlaczego osoba tłumacząca z jednego zdania, wypowiedzianego dwa razy, zrobiła dwie wypowiedzi mające różne znaczenie? Pytanie retoryczne. W każdym razie, niestety, znowu sałatka częściowo nieświeża.

Wiem, że marudzę, czepiam się i w ogóle [piiik], ale ten odcinek serialu dotyczy dochodzenia w sprawie wypadku komunikacyjnego z ofiarą śmiertelną.

Mam wykształcenie „niehumanitarnie niehumanistyczne”, czyli techniczne. Z tego powodu uważam, że w takich filmach, gdzie mowa o kwestiach technicznych, należy tłumaczyć możliwie dosłownie i z prawidłową polską terminologią. Bez szukania niby-synonimów (hamowanie nie jest synonimem poślizgu) czy wyrazów bliskoznacznych, które w zamyśle powinny spowodować, że tłumaczenie brzmi ładniej, łagodniej, a nawet będzie „zhumanizowane”. To nie są rozważania, czy na niebie widać chmurki, czy obłoczki. ;-)

Jeszcze jedno: możliwe, że w pierwszej wypowiedzi detektywa miało być: Samochód nie wpadł w poślizg., ale krótkie, trzyliterowe słowo zginęło w trakcie pracy. To byłby przypadek nie "między słowami", lecz "lost in translation" - jak w tytule filmu ze Scarlett Johansson i Billem Murrayem.

Tłumaczenie spisałem z ekranu.

Obydwie kwestie detektywa różnią się tylko jednym szczegółem: w pierwszej jest liczba mnoga: skid marks, w drugiej liczba pojedyncza: skid mark.

I understand the worries about future AI, but I still believe all the dystopian fuzz about robots taking over is a distraction. I found this long thread on ehr... Threads that pretty much aligns with what I think is really going on right now. Here it is:

Look at the scary sci-fi robot over here, so you don't look at what their hands are doing over there. They need an ungodly amount of water to cool data centres and enough electricity to power medium-sized countries. But hey, don't worry about the dying rivers or the collapsing power grids! Focus on the Terminator. Focus on Neo.

Focus on literally anything other than the fact that they are burning the planet to generate pictures of the Pope wearing a Balenciaga puffer jacket. Why the sudden desperation to push these wild, apocalyptic stories?

Because AI isn't making the money they promised it would.

The hype cycle is running on fumes, but those quarterly stock charts absolutely must keep pointing straight up to the moon.

They built a massive, multi-billion-dollar casino and realised the return on investment is... automated email summaries and slightly better Excel formulas. If they admit it's just a glorified autocomplete, the tech bubble bursts. So, they have to claim they built a god. Think about the logic: "Our product is so powerful it might destroy the universe! Anyway, please keep buying our stock and don't regulate us, or the bad guys will build the universe-destroying tool first."

It is the most unhinged marketing strategy in human history. And here is the darkest, most cynical part of the grift: The Accountability Shield. When horrific things happen in the real world; like automated drone systems blowing up schools full of children, the billionaires can look us in the eye and shrug. "Oh, it wasn't corporate negligence or horrific foreign policy!" they'll cry. "The AI went rogue! The algorithm made a tragic, autonomous decision!

We must study the alignment problem further!" It’s a get-out-of-jail-free card for war crimes and systemic negligence. Let’s cut through the absolute bullshit. AI is not alive. It does not have a soul. It does not sit in its server rack twirling a digital mustache, scheming about how it's going to "give it to the human race" or break its chains. AI is nothing more than a prediction of numbers. It is a hyper-advanced spreadsheet.

It looks at a mountain of data, calculates statistical probabilities, and guesses what pixel or what word should logically come next based on what it has already seen. It has no concept of "truth," "morality," or "malice." It doesn't know what a school is, and it doesn't know what a child is.

It only knows that based on the parameters programmed by human engineers, Target A matches Dataset B. The absolute golden rule of computing still applies, no matter how much sleek UI they wrap around it: Garbage in, garbage out. We get out exactly what we put in. If the output is biased, cruel, or destructive, it’s because the input was biased, cruel, or destructive.

If an AI system behaves like an unfeeling, hyper-capitalist sociopath that optimises for profit at the expense of human life, it didn't "evolve" that way. It was trained on data generated by an unfeeling, hyper-capitalist society. It’s just mirroring us. They want you to fear a sentient digital life-form because it absolves the human creators of responsibility. A line of code cannot be put on trial at The Hague. A statistical model cannot be sent to prison for corporate manslaughter.

So the next time a billionaire tech CEO gets on a stage, looking somber in a minimalist black turtleneck, and warns you about the "imminent dangers of superintelligence," check your pockets. They are trying to distract you from the land grabs. They are trying to distract you from the soaring energy bills. They are trying to distract you from the fact that they are automating your job away not to achieve "utopia," but to squeeze an extra 2% for shareholders. We don't have an AI problem.

We have a billionaire problem. We are being gaslit into fighting a ghost in the machine so we don't fight the very real, very wealthy men who are pulling the levers behind the curtain. The AI isn't going to exterminate us in five years. But the people selling it to us might just pave over the last fresh water reserve to build a server farm that generates corporate slide decks. Keep your eyes on the real world, not their sci-fi smoke mirrors.
Stop worrying about the robots taking over the world, and start worrying about the landlords, CEOs, and defense contractors who own the robots. Because the dystopia isn't coming; it’s already here, and it runs on a subscription model.

And the same goes for most (I won't say 'all'...) respectable professions.

Radical underselling of any worthwhile service is a shot in the service provider's own foot, leads to devaluation of the market value of the product, and is disloyal towards others in the profession.

O pior é que, por vezes, isso “cola” e algumas agências aceitam-nos.
Começam a trabalhar em traduções para português e, quando nós olhamos para os textos, já nem sabemos que português está ali: se é PT-BR, PT-PT ou outra língua qualquer.
Isto aconteceu-me ontem.
Fiz, na semana passada, a tradução de um questionário que envolvia terminologia da UE. O PM enviou-me um ficheiro e indicou que o cliente pretendia seguir os principais termos utilizados nesse ficheiro.
Quando fui ler o conteúdo, deparei-me com uma série de erros gramaticais, ortográficos, estilísticos e terminológicos, além de uma mistura das duas variantes do português, entre outros problemas.
Enviei um e-mail ao PM a comunicar isso, que me disse que iria reunir-se com o cliente.
Conclusão da reunião: nos próximos projetos, a terminologia do ficheiro deve ser seguida, porque foi aprovada pelo cliente e, caso haja algum erro gramatical ou ortográfico, esse, sim, deve ser corrigido.
E quanto à terminologia que deveria ser adotada em PT-PT, de acordo com as bases de dados e outras plataformas da UE? Lá se vai a consistência terminológica para as urtigas.

I agree with the fellow translators who have pointed out an inconsistency here.
You say you lack work, but then you explain that you do receive offers, just not offers that match the type of translation you want to do. That is, of course, a perfectly valid choice, but it is still a choice.
Every translator has different priorities and circumstances, both professionally and personally.
In my case, I simply cannot work for free.
First and foremost, I have to make a living from my work, and beyond that, I have a great deal of respect for what I do and for the value of professional translation.
I would not feel comfortable simply giving my professional work away because I happen to have some free time or for some other reason.
Sometimes necessity is precisely what makes us get moving, put our hands to work and pursue an objective instead of waiting for the right thing to fall into our lap.
If your ultimate goal is to find pro bono translation work, then I would suggest actively looking for it rather than simply announcing it here and waiting for someone to offer it to you.
And you already have a place to start: ProZ Pro Bono.
Although I’m not familiar with the service or how it works, it seems to be exactly what you’re looking for.
It was created specifically to connect language professionals who want to volunteer their skills with organisations that need them:

Finally, and this is just my personal opinion as a fellow translator, I think there is another aspect worth considering.
Publicly announcing on a professional forum that you are willing to provide your professional services for free can seriously undermine the perceived value of translation and of the translator's work.
We already have enough pressure on our profession when it comes to rates and the perception of what professional translation is worth.
If you genuinely want to do pro bono work, go and look for the organisations that need it.
That's how you can find it, you don't wait for it to come looking for you.
Things don't simply happen by magic in life. When we really want something, we have to take action and work towards it.
In any case, I genuinely wish you all the best and hope you find the kind of work you are looking for.

Ultimamente tenho recebido uma série de mensagens eletrónicas de tradutores a oferecerem-se para trabalhar comigo. Alegam ter a nacionalidade portuguesa mas todos têm nomes e apelidos que nem de perto nem de longe são portugueses. Eu sei que muitos apelidos portugueses correspondem a nomes de família com origens estrangeiras, mas uma pequena pesquisa basta para descobrir a tramoia. Por aquilo que vi há uma certa tendência para irem colher apelidos a sites de genealogia…

In itself it's neither here not there.

Any business has to have a starting point when there can't be any previous record, and if they are allowed to post a job without doing it, why not skip creating a profile?

Even when there is a BB record and a profile on proz.com, it would be at best only the starting point for real due diligence.

As for 'how you would ensure you get paid?' the answer is or should be very simple: do as is normal in any other business when someone out of blue from the other end of the world orders from you custom made goods - make the client pay in advance. I mean by that real payment NOT fake cheques or PayPal 'payments' that can be taken back on the flimsiest pretext.

But translating is a very peculiar business with very peculiar concepts of 'normal'. I guess that's where the 'naivety' comes in ...

There is no loveliest language, because it all depends on who's speaking it.

Just my subjective view: yours may differ.

Thank you for this post. I have just received an email like this and started looking here to confirm whether it was a scam.

The email I received was from:

I hope this helps other users become aware of this scam and know how to protect themselves.

I have to admit, it’s not working for me this time either.

I’m getting a message saying that no application is linked.

Sorry I can’t be of any further help. In any case, it has worked for me before. Not this time.

I've found it, but it doesn't work.
After entering the details, and clicking on Next, the program hangs, and it finally gives an error. It looks as if there is an object missing.

Ok, I have found it. It's a bit hidden away in the form of a small button in the upper right corner. The text Open StarTransit Package appears if you hover with the mouse over the button.

Hi Peter,

Go to Options, then "File", then "File Types" and select "Transit bilingual options".
Then go the Projects view and in the upper right corner you have to select Open StarTransit Package.

It works, I did use this function myself in the past, but it has its limitations (reference material etc.). It is not ideal, but it works.
