Inventories for the upcoming model year are far below what they were last year as a result of reveal and production delays.
Issues with vehicles inventories, both new and used, have become a common problem at dealers across the country in recent months.
The cycle for new vehicles reaching dealer lots has been pushed back, but 2021s could soon be more bountiful at dealerships.
This past spring, automakers delayed new product reveals as uncertainty loomed; at that point, there was no saying when factories would be able to return to production or how demand for new vehicles would be impacted by a largely unprecedented recession. Now that some semblance of normalcy has returned to the auto industry, 2021-model-year vehicles are reaching dealer lots, but much slower and later than they did last year.

New-Car Sales Fall for Second Consecutive Quarter
During this same week in 2019, more than 11 percent of new-vehicle inventory in dealer lots was made up of 2020 models. Currently, only 2 percent of current inventory are 2021 models, according to an analysis from Cox Automotive.
"They’re just sort of behind. The white-collar workers are behind in planning the model-year rollovers; the factories have had a difficult time getting the supply chain up to speed," Charlie Chesbrough, Cox Automotive senior economist, told Car and Driver. “I think some of it is the manufacturers themselves just said, 'Let's not introduce new problems, let's just try and get back to production of our old vehicles.' "
Chesbrough also noted that dealers are having a tougher time getting through new inventory from last year as opposed to the year prior. Currently, 2.3 percent of new vehicles sold as new are 2019s, while last year, only 1.6 percent were 2018s.
In recent months, issues with vehicle inventories have come to the forefront at dealerships across the country, both with new and used vehicles. More expensive vehicles have been particularly depleted, since buyers with higher incomes have been less impacted by the economic downturn compared to those with lower incomes. Mid-size pickups such as the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado are under the most strain.
Simultaneously, demand for used vehicles has made a swift recovery. That demand has been compounded by buyers in the market for new vehicles who are opting to buy a used vehicle since they can't find what they're looking for. "The used market is experiencing a dramatic recovery: Used vehicles were sitting almost untouched at the start of the pandemic, and now they're practically flying off dealer lots," Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com executive director of insights, said in a note.
Nonetheless, now that automakers have returned to almost full production and have revealed their 2021 lineups, it is expected that dealer lots will soon have a closer to normal level of 2021 models. "My guess is that we will start to see more of the normal model-year rollover activities start to happen," Chesbrough said. "I just think we’re going to see it as a continuous delay throughout the course of the fall, versus what is normal for this time of the year."

The BMW 507 was conceived by U.S. automobile importer Max Hoffman who, in 1954, persuaded the BMW management to produce a roadster version of the BMW 501 and BMW 502 saloons to fill the gap between the expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL and the cheap and underpowered Triumph and MG sports cars. BMW engineer Fritz Fiedler was assigned to design the rolling chassis, using existing components wherever possible.[2] Early body designs by Ernst Loof were rejected by Hoffman, who found them to be unappealing. In November 1954, at Hoffman's insistence, BMW contracted designer Albrecht von Goertz to design the BMW 503 and the 507.[7]
Thirty-four Series I 507s were built in 1956 and early 1957.[8] These cars had welded aluminium fuel tanks of 110 litres (29.1 US gal) capacity behind the rear seats.[7] These large tanks limited both boot space[7] and passenger space, and gave off the smell of fuel inside the car when the hood was erected or the hardtop was in place.[8] Series II and later 507s had fuel tanks of 66 litres (17.4 US gal) capacity under the boot, shaped around a space for the spare tyre to fit.[7]

The 507 frame was a shortened 503 frame, the wheelbase having been reduced from 2,835 millimetres (111.6 in) to 2,480 millimetres (98 in).[2][3] Overall length was 4,385 millimetres (172.6 in), and overall height was 1,257 millimetres (49.5 in).[3] Curb weight was about 1,330 kilograms (2,930 lb).[9] The body was almost entirely hand-formed of aluminium,[10] and no two models were exactly the same. 11 cars were sold with an optional hand-fabricated removable hardtop. Because of the car-to-car differences, each hardtop fits only the car for which it was made.[citation needed]
The front suspension had parallel double wishbones with torsion bar springs and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension had a live axle, also sprung by torsion bars, and located by a Panhard rod and a central, transverse A-arm to control acceleration and braking forces. The brakes were Alfin drum brakes of 284.5 mm (11.2 in) diameter, and power brakes were optional. Late-model 507s had front Girling disc brakes.[citation needed] & Pirelli 185VR16 Cinturato radial tyres.
The engine was BMW's aluminium alloy OHV V8, of 3,168 cubic centimetres (193.3 cu in) displacement, with pushrod-operated overhead valves. It had two Zenith 32NDIX two-barrel carburetors, a chain-driven oil pump, high-lift cams, a different spark advance curve, polished combustion chamber surfaces, and a compression ratio of 7.8:1,[7] yielding 150 metric horsepower (110 kW) DIN at 5,000 rpm.[4][7] It was mated to a close ratio four-speed manual transmission.[7] The standard rear-end ratio was 3.70:1, but ratios of 3.42:1 and 3.90:1 were optional.[2][7] A contemporary road test of a 507 with the standard 3.70:1 final drive was reported in Motor Revue, stating a 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 11.1 seconds and a top speed of 122 mph.[11]

The 507 made its debut at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York in the summer of 1955.[12] Production began in November 1956. Max Hoffman intended the 507 to sell for about US$5,000, which he believed would allow a production run of 5,000 units a year. Instead, high production costs pushed the price in Germany to DM 26,500 (later 29,950),[13][note 1] driving the U.S. price initially to $9,000 and ultimately $10,500 ($93,000 today).[14] Despite attracting celebrity buyers including John Derek and most notably Elvis Presley (who owned two),[15] Hans Stuck and Georg "Schorsch" Meier, and being powered by a V8 engine, the car never once reached more than 10% of the sales volumes achieved by its Stuttgart rival, the six cylinder Mercedes-Benz 300SL.[3]
Intended to revive BMW's sporting image, the 507 instead took BMW to the edge of bankruptcy—the company's losses for 1959 were DM 15 million. The company lost money on each 507 built, and production was terminated in late 1959.[4][16] Only 252 were built,[11][17] plus two prototypes. Fortunately for the company, an infusion of capital from Herbert Quandt and the launch of new, cheaper models (the BMW 700 and later the 'New Class' 1500) helped the company recover.[citation needed]

The styling of the 507 later influenced the Z3,[18] the Z4,[citation needed] and, most noticeably, the Z8,[19][20] with its chromed side vents and horizontal front grilles.[19] The 507 remains a milestone model for its attractive styling. 202 507s are known to survive, a tribute to the car's appeal.[citation needed]
Notable owners[edit]
Elvis Presley, as noted above and while stationed in Germany on duty with the US Army bought two models. His first 507, a 1957 model (chassis # 70079 and colored white), had been raced by Hans Stuck, used as a press demonstrator by BMW, as well as appeared in a German musical comedy entitled "Hula-Hopp, Conny" (released in March 1959). Because many of Presley's fans left lipstick marks on the car, mainly while parked outside his home at 14 Goethestrasse, in Bad Nauheim, he had it painted red. It was imported into the United States in 1960 and was bought by Alabama disc jockey Tommy Charles, who had it extensively modified, including having the engine replaced with a Chevrolet V8.[21] In July 2014, BMW Group announced that Presley's car, would be on display for a short period at the BMW Museum in Munich, before being entirely restored by its Classic department. This fully restored car, now back to its original white color, after being displayed in the newly renovated BMW Zentrum museum located at their US manufacturing center in Greer, SC., has returned to the BMW Museum in Munich, Germany[22]
Presley reportedly gave his second 507, (chassis # no. 70192) to Ursula Andress, who starred in Fun in Acapulco with him in 1963.[note 2] Andress's husband, John Derek, who had yet another 507 but had just sold it to entertainer Fred Astaire, then had the 507 Elvis gave his wife especially customized, which included changing its color from white to light blue, as well as having the engine replaced with a Ford 289 V8. Andress sold the car in 1997 to George Barris for US$300,000. The car was then again restored with a correct drivetrain by a later owner.[23][24] When the car arrived at McDougall's Carrera Automotive it had also been repainted black. Being that the original engine was lost to time 2 503 V8's were located along with the dual carburetor intake from a 507. Both engines were made into a running engine with BMW AG making a new engine gasket kit including head gaskets at a cost of US$25,000. It was also returned to its original white color and subsequently sold at auction for US$350,000[25] and at another auction in 2011 for US$1,072,500.[24]
Bernie Ecclestone's 507 fetched GB£430,238 (US$904,000) at an auction in London in October 2007.[26] At the Amelia Island Concours in March, 2014 a 507 sold at auction for $2.4 million.[27]
John Surtees was given a 507 by Count Agusta for winning the 1956 500cc World Motorcycle Championship on a MV Agusta. Surtees worked with Dunlop to develop disc brakes for the front wheels of the 507, and his 507 eventually had disc brakes on all four wheels.[20] Surtees owned his 507 until his death.[28] Soon after, in July 2018, the Surtees car sold for £3,809,500 plus commission, the equivalent of US$5 million and thus the highest ever paid for a 507.[29] On December 1 of 2018, a 507 owned by BMW 507 and 503 designer Albrecht von Goertz was sold for £2,367,000 plus commission also at Bonhams. Presley supuestamente le dio su segundo 507, (chasis # no. 70192) a Ursula Andress, quien protagonizó Fun in Acapulco con él en 1963.[nota 2]El marido de Andress, John Derek, que tenía otro 507 pero acababa de venderlo al artista Fred Astaire, personalizó luego especialmente el 507 que Elvis dio a su esposa, incluyendo cambiar su color de blanco a azul claro, así como el reemplazo del motor por un Ford 289 V8. Citroen Xsara is a small car manufactured b the PSA Group since 1997, with
the first generation introduced in 1997.
Successor of Citroen ZX, Xsara is based on the same platform as Peugeot 306 and
came in three body configurations: 3- and 5-door hatchback plus a 5-door estate.
Xsara's engine lineup included no less than eight variants, starting with a 1.4i
developing 75 horsepower and ending with a 2.0i version producing 135 hp. The
first Xsara remained in production for approximately three years, until the parent
company upgraded the whole series an rolled out a revised model.

Author’s note: This is a fanfic that takes place in the “Ready Player One” universe. If you haven’t read “Ready Player One” this story won’t make much sense. Also it has some spoilers, so you should definitely not read this if you haven’t read the book.
“Ready Player One” is copyright 2012 by Ernest Cline.
Lacero sat in the shuttle’s cargo bay, lost in his own thoughts. Actually, he was in a haptic feedback unit in his living room. But within the world of the OASIS, he was cruising across the sector in a dilapidated cargo ship based on the Eagle Transporter from “Space 1999”.
Two egg hunters, or “gunters”, sat across from him discussing their plans for finding Anorak’s Easter Egg. The woman, a techie, wore a skin-tight jumpsuit with numerous belts, each laden with technological gadgetry and weapons. The other, a man sporting a long grey beard, wore a blue robe decorated with occult symbols. Theirs had been a good partnership, effective in both magic and tech zones and especially strong in chaos zones.
“How about you, friend?” said the wizard.
“Huh?” asked Lacero.
“What will you do if you win?”
Lacero rolled his eyes. “I’m not a gunter.”
The two adventurers smirked to each other then turned back to him. “Suuure,” said the techie. “You just happen to be a well-armed, high-level guy headed to planet Gygax?”
“Yeah, come on,” said the wizard. “Thanks to that idiot Pendergast’s press conference last week, everyone knows about the Copper Key clue. And it obviously refers to the Tomb of Horrors. Every gunter in the OASIS is headed to Gygax nowadays. There’s no official Tomb of Horrors zone there, but seriously, where else could it be?”
“Fine,” Lacero sighed. “I’m looking for the Easter Egg, but I’m not a ‘gunter’.”
The techie frowned. “Looking for the Easter Egg is the definition of a gunter, isn’t it?”
“No!” Lacero said. “You gunters are part of the problem!”
The two looked at him quizzically.
“The whole world’s going to hell,” Lacero said. “And OASIS is why. People care more about this collection of bits and bytes than they do about the real world.”
“Oh come on,” said the wizard. “Life’s tough, yeah, but you can’t blame OASIS. The fossil fuels ran out, corporations got too much power, and-”
“Bull,” Lacero interrupted. “That’s just an excuse people use to dodge responsibility. The world is what we make it. We could have found solutions to the energy crisis if we’d tried. And the corporations only took over because no one else was willing to deal with the crap necessary to run a society. No one cared. The whole damn world is obsessed with this place. It’s a constant escape from reality. But it’s not reality. And the real world is crumbling around us while the people obsess over idiotic video games.”
“OASIS does tons of good for people,” the techie protested. “Their schools are the best primary educational system in the world, and they’re free.“
“Yeah whatever,” Lacero said. “A few PR stunts doesn’t absolve GSS of their sins. You know what they are? Drug dealers. They sell is escapism and the whole world is addicted. And it’s every bit as destructive as heroin. A few schools won’t wash the blood off their hands.”
“Oh come on,” said the wizard. “What blood?”
“My sister, for one,” Lacero said darkly.
The two gunters remained silent for a moment. Then, the wizard said. “Okay… what do you mean?”
“She spent every waking moment in her haptic,” Lacero began. “She ignored friends, family, and anyone else who cared about her. She’d only leave OASIS long enough to eat and sleep. And half the time she’d do that while wearing her haptic anyway. She lived in a meth-infested tenement, spending what little money she had left from Dad’s will on her stupid obsession.
“When Halliday died she went in to overdrive. When the hunt first started, people didn’t realize everyone would get stumped. Some thought it would only be a matter of days, maybe weeks before it was all over. She became obsessed. She stopped sleeping because it took up too much time. She started taking meth to stay awake. She figured she could sleep later. You can guess where this is going.
“She’d been dead in her haptic for three days before she was discovered. The only reason anyone noticed was because neighbors complained about the smell. Drug overdose, of course.”
“Sheesh,” said the techie. “Sorry for your loss. That’s terrible.”
“You want to know what I’ll do if I win? I’ll shut down GSS. Dismantle everything it has and sell it off. OASIS will be dead, and people will have to face reality. They’ll be forced to live in the world they’ve been neglecting. Then maybe, just maybe, they’ll start to make it better. Meanwhile I’ll be rich.”
“You’re kind of a zealot,” said the wizard. “You know that?”
“Damn right I’m a zealot,” Lacero said. “This isn’t a game. The fate of the world is literally at stake here. And I would happily kill for this cause. And I don’t just mean avatars, either. I mean in the real world. You get me?”
The two gunters were cowed into silence. It didn’t matter. He wasn’t interested the approval of escapism-addicts or anyone else in the OASIS. As far as he was concerned, they were all enemies.
Gygax turned out to be a bust. Not only was it crawling with gunters, there was no hint of the Tomb of Horrors anywhere. It would be another two months before he made progress.
Having researched the matter thoroughly, Lacero knew that one of Halliday’s first purchases when he got rich was a reproduction of the DeLorean from Back to the Future. It was a popular model of transport in OSAIS, and one of the game’s original available craft.
Of course, the Time Control circuits were just for show and the Flux Capacitor did nothing. OASIS could do a lot in its simulation, but it couldn’t make you travel in time. It would have to reverse the levelling and progress of all the other players. No, it wasn’t possible.
Or was it?
There were numerous areas in the OASIS that were “instance zones”. That meant they would create a duplicate of themselves for everyone who entered. Each person would get their own private copy while they were there. It was a common video game technique dating back to the early part of the century.
Lacero realized that an instance zone, having only one player to work with, could actually have time travel as a mechanic. So he bought a DeLorean time machine (they were available at countless shops), and started exploring as many instance zones as he could. At each one, he would try the various dates Marty McFly travelled to in the films: November 5, 1955; October 26, 1985; October 21, 2015; and September 2, 1885.
It never worked. The car would go through the motions of sparking, flaming tire tracks, and a bright flash when he reached 88mph, but no time travel would occur. At least, not until he got to Cloud Cuckoo Land.
Cloud Cuckoo Land was a planet covered with the most extreme and bizarre conspiracies anyone had ever come up with. It had a number of scenarios players could take part in, from uncovering an Illuminati to finding crashed alien spacecraft to any other strange or new-age ideals people could imagine. On Cloud Cuckoo Land, they were all true.
Occasionally, people wondered why there was a reproduction of Mt. Shasta in an otherwise unimpressive mountain zone. Those that had visited it also wondered why they were placed in an instance zone when there wasn’t anything worth doing there.
Lacero had picked up on this oddity while searching around for instance zones and decided to check it out. Once there, as usual, he tried the various Back to the Future dates. He had the flying version of the DeLorean, so getting up to 88mph was not a problem. But as usual, nothing happened other than some special effects. He was about to leave when a thought struck him: What’s so special about Mt. Shasta?
He did a simple search online for Mt. Shasta in the 1980’s, and found something significant: The Harmonic Convergence.
The Harmonic Convergence was a new-age cultish phenomenon that came and went in 1987. It was supposedly a major event in the Mayan calendar that coincided with a planetary alignment. The convergence was strongest in certain “power centers” of which Mt. Shasta was the most potent. In reality it was just a bunch of drug-addled hippies convincing themselves they’d had a shared experience. It was a perfect scenario for Cloud Cuckoo Land. But there was one catch: The Harmonic Convergence could not be done at any old time. It began on August 16th, 1987 and only lasted two days.
Lacero typed the date into his Time Circuits. He gunned the hoverdrive until he hit 88mph and the usual flash happened with flaming tire tracks left behind him. But this time, something was different.
A moment ago, it had been winter. Now it was much greener, and a large crowd was visible at the base of the mountain. He’d “traveled in time”. He landed the DeLorean at the edge of the crowd and joined them.
At least 100 people, all in 1980’s apparel, sat in a circle and chanted. Had they been real people, he would have been disgusted by the ridiculous display. But these were just NPCs, controlled by the computer, and part of the scenario.
He sat among them and half-heartedly chanted as well.
After a few moments, clouds formed over the chanting circle and the wind picked up. The NPCs cheered as the Harmonic Convergence began. Then, words appeared in the sky and the booming voice of James Halliday read them throughout the heavens:
You seek solutions to the gates,
But know you what reward awaits?
Like Kirk, Scott, and Chekov, too
The genesis is all for you
Lacero laughed. He’d figured out the meaning immediately. At last, he saw a way to make it all happen! Everything he wanted! It could be done!
“I have to say, you tested in the 99th percentile of all candidates,” said the interviewer.
“Thank you,” said Lacero.
“It was one of the shortest hiring discussions we’ve ever had. You scored extremely high on intelligence and determination. Also, your knowledge of Halliday is exemplary. We believe you could be a valuable addition to the IOI family in our Oology Division.”
Lacero nodded. “Sounds great.”
“We’d like to offer you a full-time job.” The interviewer waved his hand and a contract appeared in the air. It flew to Lacero and hovered in front of him. “We’d like an answer within 24 hours. Feel free to review the contract. But I can give you the basics: Free room and board at the real-world IOI headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Medical, dental, two weeks of vacation per year, the usual stuff. And if you are the one who actually finds the Easter Egg, you’ll get a twenty-five million dollar bonus. Of course, should you find the Egg, all benefits from it become the property of IOI.”
“Understood,” said Lacero. He took a moment to look over the contract. There was a lot of legalese, but it was clear that IOI would get all the GSS stock if he found the Egg, and they would also control any special abilities his avatar got as a result.
It didn’t matter. They’d never get a chance. The Harmonic Convergence made that clear.
You seek solutions to the gates, but know you what reward awaits? It didn’t get much more blatant than that. The clue wasn’t about the Copper Key. It was about the prize itself.
Like Kirk, Scott, and Chekov, too, the genesis is all for you. The names mentioned were, obviously, all characters in Star Trek. While the TV show was from the 1960’s, four of the Star Trek movies came out in the 1980s. Right in Halliday’s wheelhouse.
Within the Star Trek universe, the “Genesis Device” was an invention that could create life on a lifeless world. It would also destroy any life that was there to begin with. So the winner of the Egg would have the power of life and death in OASIS. That was hardly notable. In fact, it was pretty much to be expected.
More important, though, was the mention of Kirk, Scott, and Chekov. It was a reference to a specific scene. In the two movies related to the Genesis Device, there was only one scene where those three characters, and only those three characters, did something together: When they entered the self-destruct codes for the Enterprise in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
So there it was. The winner of the Egg would have the power to destroy the entire OASIS. It was Lacero’s dream come true. If he won, he would activate the self-destruct immediately. That would be it. IOI could cry about it later, and they’d probably sue the pants off him. They might even try to kill him out of spite. But it they wouldn’t be able to bring OASIS back.
“I’m sure everything will be in order,” Lacero said, pressing his thumb to the contract to sign.
“Great!” said the interviewer. “Oh, and we’re going to need to know your real name, for legal purposes.”
“Sorrento,” he said. “Nolan Sorrento.”
The interviewer shook his hand. “Welcome aboard, Nolan. Your employee number is IOI-655321. I think you’ll fit right in.”

"Sí, ya", dijo Lacero. "Algunos trucos de relaciones públicas no eximen a GSS de sus pecados. ¿Sabéis lo que son? Traficantes de drogas. Todo lo que venden es una evasión y todo el mundo es adicto. Y es tan destructivo como la heroína. Unos pocos colegios no les limpiarán la sangre de las manos ".
"Oh, venga ya", dijo el mago. "¿Qué sangre?"
"Mi hermana, por mi ejemplo", dijo Lacero sombríamente.

Solo dejaba OASIS el tiempo suficiente para comer y dormir. Y la mitad del tiempo lo hacía llevando su traje háptico de todos modos. Vivía en un bloque de pisos infestado de metanfetamina, gastando el poco dinero que le quedaba de la herencia de papá en su estúpida obsesión.
“Cuando Halliday murió, ella se puso a mil por hora. Cuando comenzó la caza, nadie se dio cuenta de que todos se quedarían flipados. Algunos pensaron que solo sería cuestión de días, tal vez semanas antes de que todo terminara. Ella se obsesionó. Dejó de dormir porque le llevaba demasiado tiempo. Comenzó a tomar metanfetamina para mantenerse despierto. Pensaba que podría dormir más tarde. Podéis imaginar a dónde va esto.
"Llevaba tres días muerta en su traje háptico cuando la encontraron. La única razón por la que alguien se enteró fue porque los vecinos se quejaron del olor. Sobredosis de drogas, por supuesto.
"Jooder", dijo la techie. "Lo siento por tu pérdida. Eso es terrible."
"¿Queréis saber qué haré si gano? Cerraré GSS. Desmontaré todo lo que tiene y lo venderé. OASIS estará muerto y la gente tendrá que afrontar la realidad. Se verán obligados a vivir en el mundo que han descuidado. Entonces tal vez, solo tal vez, comenzarán a mejorarlo. Mientras tanto, seré rico ".
"Eres un fanático", dijo el mago. "¿Sabes qué?"
"joder, sí, soy un fanático", dijo Lacero. "Esto no es un juego. El destino del mundo está literalmente en juego aquí. Y de mil amores mataría por esta causa. Y no me refiero tan sólo a avatares. Quiero decir en el mundo real. ¿Me entendéis?
Los dos gunters se callaron acobardados. No importaba. No le interesaba la aprobación de los adictos a la evasión ni nadie más en OASIS. Por lo que a él respectaba, todos eran enemigos.
Gygax resultó ser un fracaso. No solo estaba lleno de gunters, no había indicios de la Tumba de los Horrores en ninguna parte. Pasarían otros dos meses antes de que progresara.
Después de investigar el asunto a fondo, Lacero supo que una de las primeras compras de Halliday cuando se hizo rico fue una reproducción del DeLorean de Regreso al futuro. Era un modelo de transporte popular en OASIS, y una de las naves disponibles originalmente en el juego.
Por supuesto, los circuitos de control de tiempo eran sólo para decorar y el condensador de flujo no hacía nada. OASIS podía hacer mucho en su simulación, pero no podía hacerte viajar en el tiempo. Tendría que revertir los niveles y el progreso de todos los demás jugadores. No, no era posible.

Había numerosas áreas en el OASIS que eran "zonas de instancia". Eso significaba que crearían un duplicado de sí mismos para todos los que entrasen. Cada persona obtendría su propia copia privada mientras estuvieran allí. Era una técnica común en los videojuegos que se remontaba a principios de siglo.
Lacero se dio cuenta de que una zona de instancia, con un solo jugador con el que trabajar, en realidad podría tener el viaje en el tiempo como mecánica. Así que compró un DeLorean máquina del tiempo (estaban disponibles en innumerables tiendas) y comenzó a explorar tantas zonas de instancias como pudo. En cada una, probaba las diferentes fechas a las que Marty McFly viajó en las películas: 5 de noviembre de 1955; 26 de octubre de 1985; 21 de octubre de 2015; y el 2 de septiembre de 1885.

Ocasionalmente, la gente se preguntaba por qué había una reproducción del monte. Shasta en una zona montañosa poco impresionante. Los que lo visitaron también se preguntaban por qué colocaron una zona de instancia cuando no había nada que valiera la pena hacer allí.
Lacero se dio cuenta de esta rareza mientras buscaba zonas de instancia y decidió comprobarlo. Una vez allí, como siempre, probó las diversas fechas de Regreso al futuro. Tenía la versión voladora del DeLorean, por lo que llegar a 88 mph no era un problema. Pero como de costumbre, no sucedió nada más que algunos efectos especiales. Estaba a punto de irse cuando un pensamiento lo vino a la mente: ¿Qué tenía de especial el monte Shasta?
Hizo una simple búsqueda en línea del monte Shasta en la década de 1980, y encontró algo significativo: La convergencia armónica.
La Convergencia Armónica fue un fenómeno de culto de la nueva era que vino y se fue en 1987. Supuestamente fue un evento importante en el calendario maya que coincidió con una alineación planetaria. La convergencia fue más fuerte en ciertos "centros de poder" de los cuales el monte Shasta fue el más potente. En realidad, solo fue un grupo de hippies adictos a las drogas que convenciéndose a sí mismos de que habían tenido una experiencia compartida. Era un escenario perfecto para Cloud Cuckoo Land. Pero había una pega: La Convergencia Armónica no se podía hacer en cualquier época pasada. Comenzó el 16 de agosto de 1987 y solo duró dos días.
Lacero introdujo la fecha en sus circuitos temporales. Pisó el pedal hasta que alcanzó 88 mph y el destello habitual sucedió dejando huellas de neumáticos en llamas tras él. Pero esta vez, algo cambió.
Hacía un momento, era invierno. Ahora todo estaba mucho más verde y se veía una gran multitud en la base de la montaña. Había "viajado en el tiempo". Aterrizó el DeLorean al borde de la multitud y se unió a ellos.
Al menos 100 personas, todas con ropa de la década de 1980, se sentaban en círculo y cantaban a coro. Si hubiesen sido personas reales, esa exhibición ridícula le habría dado asco. Pero estos eran solo NPC, controlados por la computadora, y parte del escenario.
Se sentó entre ellos y también coreó a medias.
Tras de unos momentos, se formaron nubes sobre el círculo de canto y el viento se levantó. Los NPC aplaudieron cuando comenzó la Convergencia Armónica. Luego, aparecieron palabras en el cielo y la voz retumbante de James Halliday las leyó por todo el cielo:

At the end of the show the hypnotist told his subjects, “Awake.” Something unusual happened.
One of the subjects awoke all the way. This had never happened before. His name was George Nada and he blinked out at the sea of faces in the theatre, at first unaware of anything out of the ordinary. Then he noticed, spotted here and there in the crowd, the non-human faces, the faces of the Fascinators. They had been there all along, of course, but only George was really awake, so only George recognized them for what they were. He understood everything in a flash, including the fact that if he were to give any outward sign, the Fascinators would instantly command him to return to his former state, and he would obey.
He left the theatre, pushing out into the neon night, carefully avoiding any indication that he saw the green, reptilian flesh or the multiple yellow eyes of the rulers of the earth. One of them asked him, “Got a light buddy?” George gave him a light, then moved on.
At intervals along the street George saw the posters hanging with photographs of the Fascinators’ multiple eyes and various commands printed under them, such as, “Work eight hours, play eight hours, slept eight hours,” and “Marry and Reproduce.” A TV set in the window of a store caught George’s eye, but he looked away in the nick of time. When he didn’t look at the Fascinator in the screen, he could resist the command, “Stay tuned to this station.”
George lived alone in a little sleeping room, and as soon as he got home, the first thing he did was to disconnect the TV set. In other rooms he could hear the TV sets of his neighbors, though. Most of the time the voices were human, but now and then he heard the arrogant, strangely bird-like croaks of the aliens. “Obey the government,” said one croak. “We are the government, ” said another. “We are your friends, you’d do anything for a friend, wouldn’t you?”
“Obey!”
“Work!”
Suddenly the phone rang.
George picked it up. It was one of the Fascinators.
“Hello,” it squawked. “This is your control, Chief of Police Robinson. You are an old man, George Nada. Tomorrow morning at eight o’clock, your heart will stop. Please repeat.”
“I am an old man,” said George. “Tomorrow morning at eight o’clock, my heart will stop.”
The control hung up
“No, it won't,” whispered George. He wondered why they wanted him dead. Did they suspect that he was awake? Probably. Someone might have spotted him, noticed that he didn’t respond the way the others did. If George were alive at one minute after eight tomorrow morning, then they would be sure.
“No use waiting here for the end,” he thought.
He went out again. The posters, the TV, the occasional commands from passing aliens did not seem to have absolute power over him, though he still felt strongly tempted to obey, to see things the way his master wanted him to see them. He passed an alley and stopped. One of the aliens was alone there, leaning against the wall. George walked up to him.
“Move on,” grunted the thing, focusing his deadly eyes on George.
George felt his grasp on awareness waver. For a moment the reptilian head dissolved into the face of a lovable old drunk. Of course the drunk would be lovable. George picked up a brick and smashed it down on the old drunk’s head with all his strength. For a moment the image blurred, then the blue-green blood oozed out of the face and the lizard fell, twitching and writhing. After a moment it was dead.
George dragged the body into the shadows and searched it. There was a tiny radio in its pocket and a curiously shaped knife and fork in another. The tiny radio said something in an incomprehensible language. George put it down beside the body, but kept the eating utensils.
“I can’t possibly escape,” thought George. “Why fight them?” But maybe he could.
What if he could awaken others? That might be worth a try.
He walked twelve blocks to the apartment of his girl friend, Lil, and knocked on her door. She came to the door in her bathrobe.
“I want you to wake up,” he said “I’m awake,” she said. “Come on in.”
He went in. The TV was playing. He turned it off.
“No,” he said. “I mean really wake up.” She looked at him without comprehension, so he snapped his fingers and shouted, “Wake up! The master's command that you wake up!”
“Are you off your rocker, George?” she asked suspiciously. “You sure are acting funny.” He slapped her face. “Cut that out!” she cried, “What the hell are you up to anyway?”
“Nothing,” said George, defeated. “I was just kidding around.” “Slapping my face wasn’t just kidding around!” she cried.
There was a knock at the door. George opened it.
It was one of the aliens.
“Can’t you keep the noise down to a dull roar?” it said.
The eyes and reptilian flesh faded a little and George saw the flickering image of a fat middle-aged man in shirtsleeves. It was still a man when George slashed its throat with the eating knife, but it was an alien before it hit the floor. He dragged it into the apartment and
kicked the door shut. “What do you see there?” he asked Lil, pointing to the many-eyed snake thing on the floor.
“Mister…Mister Coney,” she whispered, her eyes wide with horror. “You…just killed him, like it was nothing at all.”
“Don’t scream,” warned George, advancing on her.
“I won’t George. I swear I won’t, only please, for the love of God, put down that knife.” She backed away until she had her shoulder blades pressed to the wall.
George saw that it was no use.
“I’m going to tie you up,” said George. “First tell me which room Mister Coney lived in.”
“The first door on your left as you go toward the stairs,” she said. “Georgie…Georgie. Don’t torture me. If you’re going to kill me, do it clean. Please, Georgie, please.”
He tied her up with bedsheets and gagged her, then searched the body of the Fascinator. There was another one of the little radios that talked a foreign language, another set of eating utensils, and nothing else.
George went next door.
When he knocked, one of the snake-things answered, “Who is it?” “Friend of Mister Coney. I wanna see him,” said George.
“He went out for a second, but he’ll be right back.” The door opened a crack, and four yellow eyes peeped out. “You wanna come in and wait?”
“Okay,” said George, not looking at the eyes.
“You alone here?” he asked as it closed the door, its back to George. “Yeah, why?”
He slit its throat from behind, then searched the apartment. He found human bones and skulls, a half-eaten hand.
He found tanks with huge fat slugs floating in them. “The children,” he thought, and killed them all.
There were guns too, of a sort he had never seen before. He discharged one by accident, but fortunately it was noiseless. It seemed to fire little poisoned darts.
He pocketed the gun and as many boxes of darts he could and went back to Lil’s place. When she saw him she writhed in helpless terror.
“Relax, honey” he said, opening her purse, “I just want to borrow your car keys.” He took the keys and went downstairs to the street.
Her care was still parked in the same general area in which she always parked it. He recognized it by the dent in the right fender. He got in, started it, and began driving aimlessly. He drove for hours, thinking–desperately searching for some way out. He turned on the car radio to see
if he could get some music, but there was nothing but news and it was all about him, George Nada, the homicidal maniac. The announcer was one of the masters, but he sounded a little scared. Why should he be? What could one man do?
George wasn’t surprised when he saw the road block, and he turned off on a side street before he reached it. No little trip to the country for you, Georgie boy, he thought to himself.
They had just discovered what he had done back at Lil’s place, so they would probably be looking for Lil’s car. He parked it in an alley and took the subway. There were no aliens on the subway, for some reason. Maybe they were too good for such things, or maybe it was just because it was so late at night.
When one finally did get on, George got off.
He went up to the street and went into a bar. One of the Fascinators was on the TV, saying over and over again, “We are your friends. We are your friends. We are your friends.” The stupid lizard sounded scared. Why? What could one man do against all of them?
George ordered a beer, the it suddenly struck him that the Fascinator on the TV no longer seemed to have any power over him. He looked at it again and thought, “It has to believe it can master me to do it. The slightest hint of fear on its part and the power to hypnotize is lost.” They flashed George’s picture on the TV screen and George retreated to the phone booth. He called his control, the Chief of Police.
“Hello, Robinson?” he asked. “Speaking.”
“This is George Nada. I’ve figured out how to wake people up.”
“What? George, hang on. Where are you?” Robinson sounded almost hysterical. He hung up and paid and left the bar. They would probably trace his call.
He caught another subway and went downtown.
It was dawn when he entered the building housing the biggest of the city’s TV studios. He consulted the building director and then went up in the elevator. The cop in front of the studio recognized him. “Why, you’re Nada!” he gasped.
George didn’t like to shoot him with the poison dart gun, but he had to.
He had to kill several more before he got into the studio itself, including all the engineers on duty. There were a lot of police sirens outside, excited shouts, and running footsteps on the stairs. The alien was sitting before the the TV camera saying, “We are your friends. We are your friends,” and didn’t see George come in. When George shot him with the needle gun he simply stopped in mid-sentence and sat there, dead. George stood near him and said, imitating the alien croak, “Wake up. Wake up. See us as we are and kill us!”
It was George’s voice the city heard that morning, but it was the Fascinator’s image, and the city did awake for the very first time and the war began.
George did not live to see the victory that finally came. He died of a heart attack at exactly eight o’clock.

"Voy a atarte", dijo George. "Pero primero dime en qué habitación vivía el señor Coney".
"La primera puerta a tu izquierda según vas hacia las escaleras", dijo ella. "Georgie ... Georgie. No me tortures. Si me vas a matar, hazlo limpiamente. Por favor, Georgie, por favor.
La ató con sábanas y la amordazó, luego registró el cuerpo del Fascinador. Había otra de las pequeñas radios que hablaban un idioma extranjero, otro juego de utensilios para comer y nada más.
George fue a la puerta de al lado.

También había armas, de un tipo que nunca había visto antes. Disparó una por accidente, pero afortunadamente no hizo ruido. Parecía disparar pequeños dardos envenenados.
Se guardó el arma y todas las cajas de dardos que pudo y volvió a la casa de Lil. Cuando lo vio, se retorció con terror impotente.
"Relájate, cariño", dijo, abriendo su bolso, "Solo quiero que me prestes las llaves de tu coche". Cogió las llaves y bajó a la calle.
Su coche estaba estacionado en la misma zona en la que siempre lo estacionaba. Lo reconoció por la abolladura en el guardabarros derecho. Entró, arrancó, y comenzó a conducir sin rumbo. Condujo durante horas, pensando, buscando desesperadamente alguna salida. Encendió la radio del vehículo para ver
si podía poner algo de música, pero no había nada más que noticias y todo se trataba de él, George Nada, el maníaco homicida. El locutor era uno de los amos, pero parecía un poco asustado. ¿Por qué debería de estarlo? ¿Qué podría hacer un hombre?
George no se sorprendió cuando vio el bloqueo en la carretera y se desvió por una calle lateral antes de llegar. Georgie, muchacho, no habrá pequeña excursión al campo para tí, , pensó para sí mismo.
Acababan de descubrir lo que había hecho en casa de Lil, por lo que probablemente estarían buscando el coche de Lil. Lo aparcó en un callejón y tomó el metro. Por alguna razón no había extraterrestres en el metro. Tal vez fuesen demasiado buenos para tal cosa, o tal vez fuera porque era muy tarde.
Cuando uno finalmente se subió, George se bajó.
Subió hasta la calle y entró en un bar. Uno de los Fascinadores estaba en la televisión, diciendo una y otra vez: “Somos tus amigos. Somos tus amigos. Somos tus amigos." El estúpido lagarto sonaba asustado. ¿Por qué? ¿Qué podría hacer un hombre contra todos ellos?
George pidió una cerveza, y de repente se dio cuenta de que el Fascinador en la televisión ya no parecía tener ningún poder sobre él. Amanecía cuando entró en el edificio que albergaba el mayor de los estudios de televisión de la ciudad. Consultó el directorio del edificio y luego subió en el ascensor. El policía frente al estudio lo reconoció. "¡No!, ¡eres nada!" jadeó.
A George no le hizo gracia dispararle con la pistola de dardos venenosos, pero tenía que hacerlo.
Tuvo que matar a varios más antes de acceder al estudio, incluidos todos los ingenieros del turno. Había gran cantidad de sirenas de policía afuera, gritos alterados y pasos apresurados en las escaleras. El alienígena estaba sentado frente a la cámara de televisión y decía: "Somos tus amigos. George no vivió para ver la victoria que finalmente llegó. Murió de un ataque al corazón exactamente a las ocho en punto.
