Source text - Spanish Desde un prisma metodológico, comparar al turismo moderno con el ocio antiguo sería un grave error, desde el momento en que ambos elementos pertenecen a categorías analíticas distintas. Por un lado, el turismo es sólo una forma (de otras muchas) de ocio moderno, mientras que el otium puede comprenderse como la adaptación de la noción griega schkóle, excluida de sus signifaciones filosóficas.
El otium para los romanos (y así para gran parte del imperio) se distinguía de la ocupattio; por aquella época el ciudadano podía emplear su “tiempo libre” en diversos quehaceres los cuales iban desde la caza o la pesca (privado) hasta asistir a un evento promocionado por el emperador (público). En forma sumariada, cada evento tomaba formas sociales y estructurales específicas: la caza y la pesca, los banquetes, algunos viajes, las termas, los baños, los ludii gladiatori, las carreras, la poesía, el teatro y la bien conocida siesta; todas estas formas guardaban diferentes significaciones sagradas.
A medida que el Imperio crecía, las rígidas costumbres de Catón fueron haciéndose más laxas; ciertas interpretaciones sesgadas de las doctrinas de Epicuro (combinadas con la filosofía estoica) fueron conformando al otium como un mecanismo de distinción social y sensibilidad hedonista. Ahora bien, aun cuando algunos estratos como los esclavos no podían gozar de los beneficios del otium, sí tenían su tiempo libre o de descanso el cual utilizaban paseando por las calles de Roma o consumiendo vino en “las temibles” Tabernas.
Otra diferencia radica en que el turismo moderno se encuentra unido por definición al desplazamiento geográfico y/o viaje dentro de un marco temporal y estructural específico; aspecto por el cual se lo distingue de la migración u otros desplazamientos voluntarios. Por otro lado, en el otium, como en cualquier otro ritual, existía una devoción hacia una deidad en particular; así las fiestas y los banquetes se ofrecían en honor a Baco, Saturno o Júpiter mientras que también los ludii gradiatori recordaban una y otra vez, el control técnico y material de Roma sobre la naturaleza y sobre los otros pueblos; en efecto, la ociosidad adquiría cierta obligación y responsabilidad para con los dioses. No asistir a las “fiestas bacanales” o a las “saturnalias” podía ser un acto de libre elección, de no ser por los temidos castigos se creía tanto Saturno como Baco podían ejercer en los negocios. Esta perspectiva última, separa en gran medida al otium (semi-voluntario) de las formas actuales que adquiere el turismo como actividad comercial.
Sin embargo, al margen de sus diferencias (sustanciales en algunos puntos) tanto turismo como otium podrían compararse teniendo en cuenta que ambos tenían a la razón como el elemento principal de evolución y jerarquía entre los hombres. Por lo tanto, el otium al igual que el turismo no sólo funcionan como un reforzador (o desinhibidor) de los roles objetivados en la vida cotidiana dentro del propio grupo, sino además recuerdan a los hombres ciertas “premisas” básicas para el funcionamiento de su sociedad.
Translation - English From a methodological point of view, comparing modern tourism with the ancient notion of otium would be a serious error, since they belong to different analytical categories. Tourism is merely one form of modern leisure among many, whereas otium can be seen as an adaptation of the ancient Greek notion of scholé (“leisure”), without the latter’s philosophical overtones.
In Rome, and across the Empire, otium was distinguished from occupatio. In Roman times, citizens could use their free time to indulge in various activities, from private pursuits such as hunting or fishing, to public ones in the form of imperially sponsored events. Every event took on specific social and structural forms, whether it was hunting, fishing, banqueting, travelling, visiting thermal spas, bathing, attending gladiatorial games or the races, poetry, theatre, and the famous siesta. All of these forms of leisure had unique sacred meaning.
As the Empire grew, the rigid customs of Cato began to be relaxed. Certain liberal interpretations of the teachings of Epicurus (combined with Stoicism) began to transform otium into a mechanism for defining social status and indulging hedonistic sensibilities. Although some members of society (such as slaves) were unable to enjoy the benefits of otium, they did have free time, which was spent wandering through the streets of Rome or drinking wine in the notorious taverns.
Another radical difference between otium and modern tourism is that the latter involves, by definition, geographical displacement and/or travel within a specific temporal and structural framework. This definition sets tourism apart from migration or other forms of voluntary displacement. Otium, by contrast, was a ritual and, as such, involved devotion to a particular deity. Offerings were made to the likes of Bacchus, Saturn, and Jupiter in the form of festivals and feasts, while the gladiatorial games (ludii gladiatori) provided constant reminders of Rome’s technical and material mastery over other peoples, and indeed over nature itself. Leisure did, in fact, entail certain obligations and responsibilities with regard to the gods. Although attendance at the Bacchanalia or Saturnalia festivals was optional, few stayed away due to the punishments it was feared Bacchus or Saturn could exact on a person’s business dealings. This semi-voluntary dimension to otium makes it very different from the commercial activity that is modern tourism.
However, despite their differences (which are substantial on certain points), both otium and tourism hold reason to be the fundamental element in human development and hierarchy. Thus, the two serve not only to reinforce (or disinhibit) objectified roles in the daily lives of the groups concerned, but also to remind people of certain basic premises that are necessary for their respective societies to function.
